Calypso is a beautiful and powerful female figure in the Odyssey. She has the ability to control people just by singing. She is also a very arrogant and self-centered person. She keeps Odysseus on the island because she loved him and wanted to give him eternal youth. However, he didn't have the same feelings, he loved Penelope, and wanted to go home.

Calypso has a large impact on the plot and story. To begin, she is the one who keeps Odysseus from leaving her island, Ogygia. Because of her, she causes Odysseus to miss seven years of his life. She decided to keep Odysseus because she wanted to make him marry her. Furthermore, she has a large impact on the story because she keeps him with her for a long time while he could be back at home with his family. This also causes a problem with the gods because she is ordered by Zeus to let him go.
