Succession

This is a picture of my local woodland next to my house. My parents always tell me stories about how 20 years ago there were much fewer trees and of a much shorter height. Since then, hundreds more have grown and a larger variety of flora are covering the floor of the woodlands. This is an example of succession, and this is a mid-late stage successive woodland due to the amount and height of the trees.

Free Range Livestock

Since taking this class, my family has been trying to order more sustainable meats, as we don’t want to give up our habits but want to be better about them. As you can see here, we purchased Free Range chicken legs from our local grocer. Free Range chickens are kept in a healthier environment than ones in CAFOs, as they have access to more land, less medication, a better source of nutrition and a less stressful environment.

Parasitic Relationships

Symbiotic relationships appear everywhere in the environment, however, not all of them help both parties. This photo for example showcases a parasitic vine plant stealing nutrients from a tree. The vine latches through the bark of the tree and into the middle of it, sucking out sugar to use for itself, making the tree weaker: as the vine grows, it suffocates more limbs and portions of the tree, weakening it until it can no longer sustain itself, killing the tree.
