I have been very alert to these issues due to working in low income areas and having students that are constantly hungry, but why do we as teachers fall into the busy schedule and strict routine of a quick snack and back to back subjects. It is so easy to do! The demands of the classroom seem to get bigger and bigger each year and it seems that the developmental growth of the students is not the determining factor of our schedules, plans, and layout of the day sometimes. This was a great section for me to not become part of the craziness, but instead be a voice for our students.

The text refers to switching the children to different teachers for different subjects as a questionable practice. That students need the constant attention of a single teacher who they can develop a predictable and meaningful relationship. However, what if this student teacher relationship is not beneficial or a "good fit" for the students; doesn't it allow for the relationship to be develop with another individual? We experimented one year with switching grade 2-5 with 2 teachers: ELA and Math; overall the outcome was good; however some students did have trouble leaving their "stuff" behind and the hustle bustle. I think that in some cases this may be a good alternative option.

This is my first year working with an "older" population and I found the 11 year old section very eye opening; they are trying to "save face" and it is how we approach scenarios that will predict the outcome.

I feel that this section is a very important reminder to slow down our "hurry ups" and allow students the time to complete tasks, develop security with stopping a task that may be undone and using a soft gentle voice, instead of a let's getting going voice that develops anxiety and nervousness for students.
