This work of Michelangelo depicts Jesus laying in his mother's lap after crucification. The cardinal himself commissioned this artwork early on into Michelangelo's career, and at age 24, Michelangelo took up the task, carving out the entire sculpture in a year out of a single block of marble. Michelangelo had created a name for himself, being described as the only artist capable of doing the job by the cardinal that commissioned it.

Michelangelo and the Style of the Renaissance

Michelangelo was known for being meticulous with his artwork, and if unsatisfied, he would leave the work unfinished despite however long he may have worked on it. He was so concise in fact, that he memorized the entire human anatomy and it's structure for his sculptures. They were so realistic and human-like that they were often described as being able to breathe. His art style, a fusion of Greek and Roman art, and his incredible memorization of the human anatomy aided him in landing a role under the Medici family, as the Renaissance was shifting away from Gothic Middle Age art, and changing into humanist themes and Roman/Greek art and architecture. He made some notorious artworks under the Medici’s, such as the statue of St. Petronius, a kneeling angel holding a candlestick, and St. Proculus. His art style represented the art that rose to fame in the Renaissance, and celebrated humanity and intelligence.

This was Michelangelo's last sculpture before his death in 1564. It is depicting a distressed Mary, holding up Jesus who is in pain and suffering. The difference in this artwork compared to others done by Michelangelo is visible, with the sculpture being blended in/more abstract, and some things being left out, such as one of Jesus's arms. Which, in comparison to Michelangelo's previous sculptures, which were designed so meticulously you could see every fabric fold and muscle, is a big change.
