1. What is one ELL strategy you have used successfully in the past? What made it successful?

2. What new strategy will you try next? What made you choose that strategy?

1. An ELL strategy that I have used in the past are sentence frames for writing an essay. The use of sentence frames was successful because it helped ELL students determine how an essay is structured and the appropriate place to write claims, text evidence, etc.
2. A new strategy that I will try next is using Table Tents with conversation starters to help with small group discussions. Students may use their focused notes to bring information to a discussion, but having conversation starters will help build their confidence with speaking and sharing their information to the group.

1. An ELL strategy that I used and was super successful with were the Word Wall/Sentence Frames for discussion. My students definitely struggle to engage in academic conversations. They struggle to begin and sustain them, so including both sentence frames and words to hit was important. They use these first usually to craft a written response and then to engage in discourse with their peers. I use them literally all the time with almost every topic. They WANT to talk to each other and they want to sound smart, so this process is only successful because they have the resources available to utilize. I've always done choral reading of directions or text with the focus on certain words, but the strategies provided to help expand and differentiate the ways I read vs. them reading is something I want to purposefully incorporate more of.

1. I use pictures and movement to supplement written vocabulary.
2. It is successful because association of the sound of words with actions or pictures triggers memory and learning.
I also pair students who struggle more with the English language with bilingual students and I offer materials in the native language as much as I can. Hands-on learning and being able to observe what others are doing is also helpful to building vocabulary and concept application. These strategies have always been highly effective.

I use picture vocabulary, sentence starters, word banks etc to help ELL students in the past. I think is was successful because students could make connections and use the clues to better understand. I am not sure what strategy I want to use next but I am willing to always try new things to help my students.

One ELL Strategy I used that worked well with my students is sentence starters for a critique essay. This strategy worked well because the students were clear about what I was looking for (a claim and supporting argument) and it clarified their thought process as they wrote- keeping them on track even when they were getting exciting listing the details and their opinions.

A new strategy that I will try next is using graphic organizers for research and note taking. I selected this strategy because I believe it will help alleviate the resistance to writing in an encore class and allow the students to be creative in showing their learning/opinions.

Melissa Trost One ELL strategy that works well in my room is sentence starters/frames with simple images. This worked well because it helped my students structure their thinking and combine their previous knowledge with new material. A new strategy that I want to try are structured brain breaks. These have not been successful for me in the past but I think they could be!!

We also, if appropriate, highlight how the suffix affects the part of speech. Then we connect the word to the students' mother tongue, look for any linguistic similarities and cultural connections. Finally, we choral read and practice pronouncing the word. After our second round; they are vocabulary ninjas!
