El Mirador is an ancient site located in Guatemala, which was once ruled by the "Mother Culture" in Mesoamerica, called the Mayans.

The Mayans are by far, the best known culture in Mesoamerica. That is because this culture attracted an unreasonable amount of archaeological attention. Also, because we have long been able to interpret it's complicated calendars and texts.

The Mayans were very intricate. and according to Dr. Richard Hansen, "there are archaeological proof that the Maya in Mirador developed a writing, astronomical, agricultural, economic, warfare, and all the needed skills that made the Maya, the most developed and complicated society" (Authentic Maya).

El Mirador, the largest ancient city of the Mayan world. Interestingly enough, this site was once a city populated by nearly one hundred thousand people. Unfortunately, El Mirador flourished as a trading center from around 200 BCE to 150 CE.

Richard Hansen, "El Mirador," Authentic Maya, Published on March 2009 & accessed on December 2014. http://www.authenticmaya.com/mirador1.htm

Source: http://amigoshostel.com/

The Danger

As historic as El Mirador is, It's a shame that this beautiful site is in danger. A few of the biggest issues that threatens this amazing site, is it's own environment, and looters.

El Mirador basin is located in the Northern Guatemalan rain forest. It encloses about 810,000 acres of this immaculate rain forest. (What lies in the Depths) With that being said, evidently the forest keeps on expanding, and unfortunately the rain forest itself is covering up what was once the capital of the Mayan culture.

Sadly, looters have devastated many of the ancient sites in pursuit of artifacts. even though they know what their doing is wrong, they still keep at it. Some even go to the extremes of destroying some of the artifacts and objects found in this site just for the pleasure."Columbian drug smugglers, called “narcos,” occasionally fly overhead. Encroaching fires from logging and agriculture are in danger of not only destroying ancient history, but killing what’s left of the Central American rain forest" (What lies in the Depths). This is such a shame!

Thankfully today, El Mirador is currently being restored from a near death exposure. "following a thousand years of assault by the jungles of the Guatemalan highlands."

http://www.ancient-wisdom.co.uk/guatemalamirador.htm

Citations: Julie Hillebrant & Jenn Hawkins, "What Lies in the Depths," Idaho State University Magazine, Published in 2009 & accessed on November 21, 2014. http://www.isu.edu/magazine/fall09/mirador-basin/

Alex Whitaker, "El Mirador, Guatemala," Ancient Wisdom, accesesed on November 21, 2014. http://www.ancient-wisdom.co.uk/guatemalamirador.htm

Graphic Source: http://www.isu.edu/magazine/fall09/mirador-basin/
