Sochi promised they would be the first zero waste olympic games.
Costs of hosting the olympics (local):
- People are displaced from their homes to build the venues
- The venues add impermeable surfaces that can disrupt the hydrological cycle
- Suren Gazaryan, a zoologist and member of the environmental campaign group Environmental Watch of the North Caucasus (EWNC) says that have documented evidence of illegal waste dumping, construction that blocks the migration routes for animals such as the brown bear, and limited access to drinking water for the locals and generally decreased their life quality.
