“No day dawns for the slave, nor is it looked for. It is all night—night forever,” - Jermain Loguen. (The son of an enslaved mother and Tennessee slavemaster father, Loguen escaped slavery to become an ordained minister and “underground railroad” agent. He helped 1,500 escapees and started black schools in New York State.)"

This quote written by Jermain Loguen, was the son of a slave owner. Loguen was born into slavery, he had first hand experience of this terrifying experience. I think what this quote is trying to say is there's no hope for the slaves and that they will never see freedom until they die or until they are set free. They repeat the process of doing hard labor work, getting beat, starved and not paid. "No day dawns for the slave, nor is it looked for." i think what he's trying to say is the day never really ends for a slave, they just keep going and going. The second part of the quote is justifying that they have no hope that's why they don't try and "look for it". Loguen later escaped and became an ordained minster in the North and wrote about his experiences while being held captive. This challenges the Southern argument which said slavery is good for the slaves themselves because this is a first hand account showing the stark opposite from experience.

In this image you can see a black man with one hand on his hip and the other holding a news paper saying "Lincoln president" and the man is standing very proudly. On the right there is a white man with his hands in his pocket and he's kind of side eyeing the black man and he doesn't look too happy. This picture is extremely racist and rude because, the speech bubble says " Hab you seen de papar sar" indicating that black people don't know how to speak or spell the correct way. The white man is mad because he thinks, now that Lincoln is president slavery will be abolished. That's why the black man looks so happy. This picture was used as propaganda to make Southerners upset about Lincolns victory and tried to persuade them to leave the union.

"I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so."

Lincoln explains in his speech that he has no intentions of abolishing slavery in the south. Lincoln believes he has "no lawful right to do so" by trying to end slavery in the South, he just doesn't want it spreading to the North or any other states. Lincolns main focus is trying to keep the North and the South united as a country because of the fact when he got elected the South was trying to leave the union. This shows the limitation of the Southerns argument because they are saying Lincoln will destroy the South by ending slavery and from this speech it shows that those are not his intentions.

"What I do say is that no man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent."

This quote by Lincoln says he believes that no man has the right to own other people. This supports the Southern argument that the republican party is an abolitionist party. A abolitionist is someone who wants to end or get rid of slavery. As Lincoln was debating the future of Kansas and Nebraska he was hoping they would be free states. The Southerns wanted Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves weather or not they should be free or slave states. Since Lincoln is debating for abolition the South labeled his party as an abolitionist party.

Since he cares more about the union rather then freeing the slaves he is not an abolitionist. This challenges the Southerns argument.
