I believe Mama is the perfect example of a grandma. Shes kind sweet and keeps her kids in check. She is a person that devotes to her family and never gives up. Mama loves to garden, but sadly she never had a garden to garden till now.

I choose a flower pot by the window sill because throughout the story Mama mentions that her plant expresses her. She said time and time again that she wanted a garden but since they lived in an apartment complex she could never have her own garden. That flower pot was the only thing that kept her sane in that household.

I picked this poem because it's about a bird who's trapped and ways for freedom but is trapped in a "cage of rage". This relates to RITS by them both the family & the bird are trapped with a chance of freedom to escape. Their escape comes with risks, the bird being bound to the ground, while the family is given freedom but hated for it.

I choose the song "Itsy Bitsy Spider" because it shows a spider that won't give up no matter how many times he fails. This relates to the novel because Mama doesn't give up when she was trapped in the old apartment. Mama never gave up just like that spider in the song.

The theme " Money causes Problems" can be found in the book many times, one situation that shows the theme is when Walter wants to buy a liquor store, but Mama says no to his request. Quote “Walter—What you ain’t never understood is that I ain’t got nothing, don’t own nothing, ain’t never really wanted nothing that wasn’t for you. There ain’t nothing as precious to me…There ain’t nothing worth holding on to, money, dreams, nothing else—if it means—if it means it’s going to destroy my boy.” This relates to the theme because Walter started to cause a rucass when Mama refused to give him money for the liquor store.
