Batman exhibits self-reliance constantly in his battles with his enemies. He portrays the kind of person who, "knows that in which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried." Batman never gives up until he has done everything he can, he does everything within his power to accomplish his goals. Batman also embodies the idea of only trusting "nothing... but the integrity of his own mind", as he has continually conceived plans to subdue his friends if they should go down the wrong path.

This song is clearly influenced by the ideas of Emerson's Self Reliance, The idea of self reliance in the song can be directly correlated by its lyrics "If I listened to everything they told me I wouldn't be here". This displays the idea of trusting only yourself as implied in the Emerson's excerpt.

If the world was full of individualists there would be a much lower unemployment rate. People would depend upon themselves, only to provide. There would also be a much better work ethic as everyone is relying on themselves and their own merit rather than others. One downside of being self reliant, however, would be a lack of cooperation and group efforts in which everyone, relying solely upon themselves, would not consider the solutions that others come up with.

Nicolas Copernicus, the man who truly proved that the Earth revolves around the sun was heavily persecuted by the church of his time. During that time, the Catholic church which had largely endorsed the idea of the Earth and Jerusalem being the center of the universe were met with concrete proof that they were incorrect. This led to the Catholic church discrediting and even throwing Copernicus into jail for his claims. The idea of challenging the Catholic church was very radical for the time and showed the reliance that Copernicus had on himself for coming out with his discoveries that he knew would warrant persecution from church authority
