Who is Guadalupe Teresa Amor Schmidtlein?

<3 She was best known as Pita Amor. She was a Mexican poet who was born to a very religious family, but that did not stop her from expressing herself and breaking boundaries. She chased the silver screen, yet her true calling came to be poetry. She is known for famous works such as "Yo Soy mi Casa", "Polvo" and "Decimas a Dios". Most of Amor's works were fictional books that many would have described as "mystical". Amor had a way of alluring people with her rebellious yet captivating nature. She was known for being risqué which was already a huge no no for her religious family. That did not stop her from posing nude for a portrait or entering a party with just a mink coat. She was the youngest of seven, and the most adventurous. Amor had made friends with María Félix and José Clemente Orozco. Both of which were very big and influential people. Her spark that drew people in did eventually dim when her son passed away due to drowning. She tried to continue with her writing, but to the people it was no longer the same. Someone who had once drawn in every pair of eyes in the room was now too cold to look in the eye. She did eventually come back to general life until she sadly passed away March 8th, 2000.

A Big Bang Beginning

<3 Starting off her list of works with a book surpassing 200 pages, Yo Soy Mi Casa became her most notable piece. This piece does a great job of showing what kind of work Amor was delivering. She put out pieces that made everyday occasions transcend their usual meaning. She created poetry that had depth to its definition. With a personality mainly described as passionate and challenging, it comes as no shock that her work had layers to it. It was not until her son's unfortunate passing did her work change, and no longer attract people like before.

Creando una Conexión

<3 Pita Amor had both become one of the most memorable poets and most ignored. Her originality and spunk wasn't seen so much in her time, especially in a young woman. She was different from the other Latinas, but that did not waver her self confidence. It connects back to Module 1 in Latin Literature when we discussed what it means to be Latino. To me one of the most significant trait Latinos have is the confidence in our drive. Our drive to do what we need to no matter the barriers in our way, and Amor was no different. She went against her family and her religion. At one point even her fans during a show she was hosting turned their backs and threw criticism her way. Having such a persistent character usually does come with being called hard headed and at certain times even bull-headed. To be a pioneer one must be resilient, and that is what it takes to be Latino.

The Attraction of her Aura

<3 Certain names stand out and truly stick with people sometimes. Pita Amor stuck out to me because of her name, it drew me in. Then after reading about her, I was captivated by seeing a women who was herself and paid no attention to the machismo in Latino culture. Amor did not allow anyone, male or female, to stop her from being herself. She wore what she wanted, acted how she wanted, and spoke however she wanted to. There was no one who would instruct her except herself. In media we see the Latinas as these fiery, outspoken, and loud women, but the sad reality I mostly see are Latinas who are compliant. It's almost as if they become maids instead of wives. It was nice to see that long ago a woman held her own.

Specific Setting

<3 Even though Amor’s settings were never specific to a certain location, she chose the same atmosphere. She never specified a country or town, but would choose an aura that was metaphysical. Almost all of her works had that similar aspect to them. Another factor that did kept reoccurring was in the beginning when she'd prefer to write sonnets or the decimal.
