         <description><![CDATA[<p>Padlet is a great tool that allows users to make posts with images, videos, text, etc.  It allows students to all share resources or answer questions in on the same space together.  </p><ul><li><p>This tool support project-based learning because it allows students to all post on the same page in different ways like videos or images with text.  It inspires creativity and engagement by including customization options and many different ways of demonstrating learning.</p></li><li><p>It is great in the <mark>synchronous</mark> environment because students can be assigned a topic in small groups, and all work on the same document at the same time while in the live class session.  </p></li><li><p>This could be used to facilitate a discussion of the different causes of the French Revolution in a live class session.  There could be 4 breakout rooms of students, each assigned a different cause.  They could each add details and information about their area to their assigned section of the Padlet.  After a certain amount of time, the whole class could come back together and share out what they put in each column for the rest of the students.</p></li><li><p>This meets Student ISTE standard 1.1b Customized Learning Environments, because students are able to build a network and customize their learning environment to support their own learning.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <title>Quizlet - online flashcards to study</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Quizlet is an online platform for digital flashcards, so students can study anywhere they have internet access.  Users can create, study, and share digital flashcards. </p><ul><li><p>This supports project-based learning by letting students create their won sets of flashcards to study on their own time.  Students are more engaged because they have a choice in how to make their flashcards, and how to study them.  </p></li><li><p>This tool is great in the <mark>asynchronous</mark> environment because students can make and study the flashcards at their own pace, on their own time, wherever they have internet access.  </p></li><li><p>Students could be assigned a theme of the book that they are going to read in the upcoming unit.  They need to come up with 10 vocab words with definitions that align with that theme.  This will help them get ready for the upcoming book.</p></li><li><p>This tool would align well with Student ISTE Standard 1.1d Technology Fundamentals, as students would be exploring a new technology and seeking to understand how it works for their own learning.  </p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <title>Google Slides - online slideshows</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Google Slides is a tried and tested tool that allows students to collaborate and customize an online slideshow to demonstrate their learning on a chosen topic.</p><ul><li><p>This tool is very simple to use, and allows students to collaborate on the slideshow at the same time to achieve an objective.  It encourages engagement and creativity by offering loads of custom templates, allowing students to add videos, music, sound effects etc.</p></li><li><p>This can be used both synchronously and asynchronously because it can easily be shared between students with a gmail address.  Students can each work on their own part of the project at different times, or together during a live session.</p></li><li><p>Students could be assigned a Greek God to research with their three other group partners.  They each would have an assigned area to research and add into the slideshow.  They could decide who does what, and wither work on it at the same time, or separately to complete the project.</p></li><li><p>This tool aligns with Student ISTE standard 1.6c Communicate Complex Ideas, because they are able to use a slideshow to visually communicate complex ideas to their peers.  </p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Canva is a platform that allows students to create various types of designs for presentations, graphics, posters, etc.  It is great for being user-friendly, and has a plethora of templates, images, and fonts to choose from.  </p><ul><li><p>Canva supports project based learning by allowing students to demonstrate their learning in different ways, and encouraging participation and engagement through creativity and personalization of content.  </p></li><li><p>This tool supports <mark>asynchronous</mark> learning because students can access their document on their own time, and go at their own pace depending on what they need.  </p></li><li><p>Students can design a Canva poster for a WW1 weapon that they choose from a short list, and include the significance and description next to the picture they create.  </p></li><li><p>This tool aligns with the ISTE Student standard 1.3c Curate Information, because students are able to curate information from digital sources to create a meaningful artifact that demonstrates their learning.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Google Sheets is a popular tool that allows users to create and share spreadsheets online, and collaborate and organize data in Google Suite.</p><ul><li><p>Sheets supports project-based learning by being able to share the same spreadsheet with multiple students, helping organize and collate data in one place, and sharing resources between collaborators.  This tool encourages engagement with easy to use features, and the ability for teachers to leave comments for feedback.</p></li><li><p>This tool is great for both learning environments because it can easily be shared for the use of multiple students live, or at different times.  It integrates perfectly with other Google Suite apps, and helps students visualize data and stay organized.</p></li><li><p>For a project students could be assigned a climate region to research, and they could report data like average temperature, rainfall, weather events, etc.  They could then add this data into a Slideshow presentation to share with and teach the class about their assigned climate region.  </p></li><li><p>This tool aligns with ISTE Student standard 1.5b Data Sets, as students will collect data and use digital tools to analyze them to facilitate problem-solving.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Flip is a video discussion platform that allows teachers to create "topics", and students can respond with short videos.</p><ul><li><p>Flip supports project-based learning by letting students create short videos in response to questions, allowing students to show their learning in a unique way.  It also supports engagement by allowing students to provide each other feedback on their videos if published for the class to see.</p></li><li><p>Flip is useful for <mark>asynchronous</mark> learning because students can create and respond to posts on their own time schedule, and go at their own pace to demonstrate their learning.  </p></li><li><p>Instead of having students respond to three deeper thinking questions about a book they just read, have them create a short video answering each question in a minute or less for the class and teacher to see.  They can then be required to watch and provide positive feedback to three or four of their classmate's responses.</p></li><li><p>This tool aligns with ISTE Student standard 1.6d Customize the Message, as students are able to present and publish personal content that customizes the medium for their target audience with a short video response.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Lucid Charts is a great way to make a mind map that is simple to use, and has many customization features that make it creative and engaging.</p><ul><li><p>This tool support project-based learning by easily sharing ideas between classmates, organizing thoughts and ideas, and allowing the work to be done in real-time or later when it is more convenient.</p></li><li><p>Lucid Spark is useful in both the synchronous and asynchronous environments because it can be used to collaborate with peers live, or some students can complete their part when they are able to at a later time.  </p></li><li><p>For a project, students can be assigned a cause of WW1 and make a concept map that charts out the different things that led up to the war related to their assigned cause.  They can then share it with a group of students who were assigned different causes to learn about the other ones.  </p></li><li><p>This tool aligns with the ISTE Student standard 1.6c Communicate Complex Ideas, because students are using digital tools to visually communicate complex ideas to others with a mind/concept map.  </p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Newsela is a huge online library that has news articles and other informational texts that can be adapted to any reading level, making them accessible to students of varying reading abilities.</p><ul><li><p>Newsela supports project-based learning by emphasizing real-world issues and challenges with up-to-date information and current events.  Students are much more engaged because they are more interested in current events, and the texts can be differentiated to different reading levels to meet the needs of diverse learners.  </p></li><li><p>This tool works well in the <mark>synchronous</mark> learning environment as it fosters collaboration and discussion between students on the current events that they read about.  With some teacher guidance, students can collaborate and use the articles from Newsela to research concepts and ideas to present to the class.</p></li><li><p>For a project, students can be assigned a different extreme weather event to research and prepare a short report and summary to the class.  They can search and find articles they are interested in, and report on the extreme weather even to their peers and educate them by connecting their learning to a present day challenge.  </p></li><li><p>This tool aligns with the ISTE Student standard 1.3a Effective Research Strategies, as students are able to use research strategies to find resources that support their learning needs, and personal interests.  </p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Google Earth is an amazing platform that is a virtual globe with satellite imagery, aerial photography, and street view all around the world.</p><ul><li><p>Google Earth supports project-based learning for students by letting them visit any place on the globe from the comfort of their own home.  This fosters engagement, interest, and creativity because students can use this tool to explore areas of the world they would never be able to visit in real life. </p></li><li><p>This tool fits well with <mark>asynchronous</mark> learning because students can access the globe whenever they need to with an internet connection, and they can go at whatever pace is comfortable for them.  </p></li><li><p>For a project, students could do research on a remote area of the wilderness or a far away civilization without having to go there in person.  </p></li><li><p>This tool aligns best with the ISTE Student standard of 1.3d Explore Real-World Issues, because students can look at very recent images of real world problems, develop ideas, and pursue answers and solutions for those ideas.  </p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Piktochart is a visual communication platform that allows users to make visually appealing presentations, reports, and other visual content easily.</p><ul><li><p>This tool supports project-based learning for students by allowing them to be creative, and engaging them through student-choice.  It is very simple, and easy to use even for students without much design experience.  </p></li><li><p>This works well in the <mark>synchronous</mark> environment because students can collaborate and work on the same canvas together in real-time.  It also helps that students can be assigned specific roles for the project as a team.  </p></li><li><p>For a project, students can be assigned a country from WW1, and directed to make their own political cartoon/war propaganda poster.  They can work in small teams, and share their poster with the class at the end of the session.  </p></li><li><p>This tool aligns well with ISTE Student standard 1.3c Curate Information, because students can use the platform to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate their learning.  </p></li></ul>]]></description>
