Reflection over "1. I believe my responsibilities are to educate my future students to help prepare them for college."

I still believe this is true, but I also feel that there is way more to being a teacher than just those things. We need to educate our future students on the required subjects/ standards, but it is also our duty to help prepare them for the real world. We as teachers should also be culturally relevant in our future classrooms by incorporating societal, racial, religious, etc. issues into our classroom. As a teacher, we should be able to create a safe place in our classroom where children feel welcome to talking about these controversial or personal issues that are plaguing our society.

New Reflection:
I believe that my responsibilities as a teacher are to educate my students, but also to guide them toward who they want to be as people. I think teachers should provide the resources necessary to help the figure out their own morals, responsibilities, and needs.

Reflection over "2. I believe that learning is finding something new that you did not know before."

I still believe this statement to be true because there are various ways you can learn something, but that something you are learning is usually new information to you. As people, we are constantly growing and learning. We tend to want to improve and find new ways to do things versus the harder older way. I believe as teachers, we will be forever learning new things alongside our students so we can adapt and change along with them.

Reflection over "3. I believe that teaching is teaching someone something that is new to them."

I do still believe that teaching is teaching someone something that is new to them, but I also now think of teaching in the professional way. Teaching is a career where you teach children, but also guide those children to be the best possible person they can be at that time. By doing that, you can give them options and show them examples of cultural relevancy in the classroom through current events, religious issues, issues in their neighborhood, societal issues, etc. Also, just by showing them you care, you will create a better relationship with your students in order to create comfortability to discuss these issues in the classroom to help guide them to become the people they want to be.

Reflection over, "4. I believe the purpose of schooling is to educate masses of people."

I do still believe that the purpose of schooling is to educate masses of people, but after many discussions in class, I feel that schooling is still a way to segregate society. I feel that schooling is a way to segregate society because the different school districts control their own curriculum. Yes, they have to follow Indiana State Standards, but they can implement or neglect different things for their schools. As we know, an urban school district curriculum is completely different than a rural city curriculum. The children are looked at completely different because they do not live in the same places. But, I also feel that districts are able to do different things because the states want their people to stay financially and racially segregated. Ex: School to Prison Pipeline.

"This approach supports and teaches social-emotional intelligence; builds community and relationships, referred

as social capital; and increases the school community’s ability and capacity to communicate and address challenges, referred to as human capital" (Restorative Justice 10).

Reflection over, "5. I believe all my future students are children who have the capacity to learn anything they put their minds to."

I do still believe that my future students are children who have the capacity to learn anything they put their minds too, but they also need to be looked at as more than just students. They are people too even if they are not adults. Their beliefs, religions, ideologies, race, ethnicities, etc. all need to be valued and incorporated into the classroom. Children are more than just students. They have interests and hobbies just like everyone else. We, as teachers, need to find what makes our students so special and expand on it through learning. We simply cannot keep continuing to ignore what makes our students so unique.

"Colorblindness creates a society that denies their negative racial experiences, rejects their cultural heritage, and invalidates their unique perspectives" (Colorblind Ideology 1).

Reflection over, "6. I believe students learn best when they learn they way they like best."

I still believe that students work the best when they use their techniques or are learning about something that interests them. I also think that in order for them to learn their best it has to be relevant to them or they find a new passion surrounding the topic. Most of the time students need excitement to get motivated. Finding that balance for children is what allows them to be their best.

"Reality pedagogy is an approach to teaching and learning that has a primary goal of meeting each student on his or her own cultural and emotional turf" (For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood 27).
