Fra Andrea Pozzo, Glorification of Saint Ignatius, ceiling fresco in the nave of Sant'Ignazio, Rome, 1691-94

Fra Pozzo was a Jesuit brother and artist. For this work at the Jesuit church he took inspiration from classical works such as Michelangelo but added more drama and emotion. The Glorification of Saint Ignatius is most famous for its perspective illusion. When looking up at the ceiling from a certain spot, it appears that the building does not have a ceiling and that the sky does not end. Instead, one can see all the way up to heaven and view Saint Ignatius entering and being welcome by Jesus. In this painting Pozzo included symbols such as women representing the four corners of the earth.

Diego Velazquez, Christ Crucified, Oil painting on canvas at the Prado Museum, Madrid, 1632, Spanish Baroque

This is the first painting in the exhibition. Velazquez was commissioned by a powerful member of the court to be used at a chapel although his typical job was painting portraits for the royal family. Slightly ahead on the trend of idealism, Velazquez’s Crucified Christ is still painted in a generally naturalistic style, yet has a cloudy, fantastical filter over it. Vazquez puts halo on Christ and Christ’s body is illuminated from nearly the front.

Mattia Preti, Saint George on Horseback, Oil painting on canvas at the Chapel of the Langue of Aragon in St. John’s Co-Cathedral, Malta, 1658, Neapolitan Baroque

Preti was an Italian artist that worked in Italy and Malta. He was commissioned by Fra Martin de Redin, Grand Master of the Order of St. John. At 275 cm by 207 cm, this is a relatively large painting. It serves as an altarpiece and shows the likeness of Saint George and his steed, as they are above a black dragon, almost as if the two of them are floating, and looking up above at angels. This is one of Christianity's more fantastical stories.
