Wells was a trained scientist. He even won a scholarship to an enterprising school. He was published in Nature where he considered himself a journalist over anything. Before he started writing fiction, he wrote textbooks. His first two books published were textbooks. He was born into a poor family. His family had always been poor; they were both born as servants, then later became shop keepers together. And he had also came up with  the thought of Wikipedia, and encyclopedias. He felt there needed to be a source that constantly changes and gets revised, extended, and replaced.
