Today we headed to the Kassaverie waterfalls. I had an opportunity to sit on the backseat of the car and had a change to enjoy the view of the western wing of the Guadeloupean butterfly. We had a task that Rita had already mentioned on friday; we should plan a lesson to our students which has a one key competence in it. I got to focus on science and technology. How to make a lesson on biology or geography, that has this one key competence in it?

The trail to the Kassaverie waterfalls took about an hour, not because of the length but because of the rainforest itself. So much different variations of green! Sometimes the journey is more important that the destination. Ok The waterfalls were also nice, but I really liked the forest itself.

We went to the rainforest today. I saw huge waterfalls that I have not seen before. I enjoyed the climate in the forest and the colors and the beautiful plants. This was an overall experience through all of your senses. On the way to the forest we got to see landscapes of Basse Terre and the huge banana plantations. Guadeloupe is very versatile and beautiful. 😍

I saw many exotic fruit like pineapple, banana and coconut. I had also seen coffee, vanilla and caocao grown here on the island. I had jams at a restaurant and at the rum distillery we saw and tasted sugarcane. Today I ate Jambon Fromace made of maniok root. I learned that it has to be prepaered in a certain way in order to get the poison out. We got the chance to take part in drying the soaked and grated maniok made into flour. I bought a small bag of this flour to take back to school with me. And I took a lot of pictures to show to student. I think I learned a lot of the local agriculture, nature and foodculture.

As I was walking along the paths in the rainforest I thought about the task that I had been given the day before. The task was to think a about how keycompetences could be taught to students here in the forest. And I came up with an idea.

„We are going to the distillery today. So it‘s the BEST day to be in a taxi.“ (Mikko)

I very much enjoyed the walk in the rainforest, especially as there were no unnerving macaques like in many SE Asian countries. Once again it showed that you can make plans in advance, but then you have to adjust anew to the situation when you find it‘s different than you imagined. So I had to restructure the lesson that I had already planned on Friday morning. Being a bit more patient might help sometimes.

Rita told me that the bananas here are picked with the blue sacks in which they are wrapped to be protected against all kinds of hungry mouths. And then they are hung up in the truck looking like clothes coming from the dry cleaner‘s. I‘d really like to see that organic wardrobe.

Today I learned and experienced the whole biology lesson in the rainforest combined with creating my lesson. We were given the task beforehand and we had to think about it in the rainforest.
I must admit that this experience was truly amazing and breathtaking- I had never been in the rainforest before. Rita told us that there are over 3200 plants in Guadeloupe and about animals- it was great to hear that snakes do not habitat the island!
The road to the forest was also unique experience and we managed to make great videos that I am going to share with my students as well.
Afterwards we went to get to know all about rhum making in Guadeloupe and that was great as well. We were told how this is done and shown the plantation with banana trees, pineapples and sugar cane of course!
I must repeat myself saying that the nature here is amazing and for me it is absolutely new experience. Since I enjoy combining English and other subjects in my classes, this will be great bonus to my teaching!

Monday has always been more difficult day for me to start working after weekend. But today it was whole different because I had very interesting outdoor lesson in the rainforest. Rita gave us a task to plan our lesson for students. The lesson had to include one of key competence which we choose on Friday. I could enjoy walking throw the path to amazing waterfall, admire nature and diversity of plants. I think that my students would definetely like to be here.
The rhum destillery was also an interesting place. Rita told us about the history of the sugar cane plantation and rhum production process.

The walk to the second waterfall today was very beautiful. The nature and all the green bursting everywhere is something I haven't seen before. I thought about different activities I could do in a place like that with my students for language learning. I immediately got a few ideas of a "Jungle Expedition". The "identity card" of the waterfall was also something that could be used with pupils.
The rum distillery was interesting to see as we have talked about slavery and the sugar cane fields. It was nice to see all the fruit that they grow for the " planteurs" and of course quite nice to taste a few too :)

Exploring the rainforest was a great experience. Seeing, hearing, smelling, touching the plants, the waterfalls, the path, the birds was really great. If we would have a chance to add the fifth sense would be peferct. There wasn’t a chance to taste it, but tasting manioc kassav was almost as special as something from rainforest. Here, on Guadeloupe, are so many things I have never seen, heard, tasted, smelled or touched before.

Walking through the rainforest was interesting, because I had to be directed on the task, finding the activities to develop social competences with my students.

My quote of day: I can imagine a little bit easier the size of fern in times of dinosaurs.

Our first stop today was at the House of Kassaverie where we discovered the artisanal production of cassava flour. I learnt that it’s very hard work. The man who was making the flour told me that he starts the work every day around 4-5 a.m. and the flour needs around five to six hours of work to be ready. He had two knife-like tools with which he spread the flour over and over again in a huge pan. There was fire under the pan and the job was not only physically demanding, he also had to withstand the heat and smoke. I bought both salty and sweet pancakes (galettes) and came to the conclusion that the sweet was sweeter.

Today's forest walk made me breathe calmly and focus on all the different shades of green and the soothing sound of flowing water. It was extremely relaxing and enchanting to be in the rainforest where you can very strongly sense the healing power of nature.

Le chute de Carbet is the biggest waterfall I have ever seen (110m) and it was really impressive. What made it even more wondrous was the information Rita told about Chinese culture in which the dragons live in waterfalls. As I watched the waterfall after hearing this, all I could see was the dragons falling down!
Furthermore, it was interesting to learn about a mythological figure, a witch called Le Soukougnan that lives in the forest and appears only at night. Like the vampires, it sucks the blood of his enemies. Rita told me the story of Le Soukougnan when I was thinking about the cultural beliefs related to forest (as my key competence is the cultural awareness and expression :)

Today we had an excursion in the rainforest. It was really great, i love forest also back home and spen a lot of time in there. Rainforest is naturally a different experience compared to our forests. I had a task to plan an exercise in the forest using ICT in the process. I got some good ideas in the forest and am ready to share them with others tomorrow.
