Puberty is a central biological event during adolescence. It is characterized by the development of secondary sexual characteristics, such as the growth of breasts, body hair, and changes in voice for both males and females.

I was the first person out of my friend group to hit puberty and was a head taller than all the boys by the time I hit 5th grade. I have not grown since then and stand at a whopping 5 foot 2.

Adolescents experience a rapid growth spurt, with significant increases in height and weight. Growth plates in the long bones of the body close as skeletal growth nears completion.

Primary sexual characteristics involve the development of reproductive organs. In females, this includes the maturation of the ovaries and the onset of menstruation. In males, it involves the development of the testes and sperm production.

The adolescent brain undergoes structural and functional changes. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for higher-order cognitive functions such as decision-making and impulse control, continues to develop.

Hormonal changes during adolescence can influence emotions and mood. Adolescents may experience heightened emotional responses and increased sensitivity to social cues.
