Puglia is the most industrialized region of Southern Italy. Most of the industrial settlements are located in the triangle Bari - Brindisi - Taranto, where industries for the production of steel and for oil refining arise, in addition to the textile and plastic industry. There are also cellars, canneries, tobacco and oil. In the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani there is a strong concentration of textile and shoe industries as in that of Lecce. In the province of Foggia particularly developed is the food industry. The region is very low in minerals, only small amounts of bauxite and methane gas are extracted.

The first settlements on the site of Melitopol (Kiz-Yar and Novoaleksandrovka) emerged in the years 1785-1814. In 1842, the village of Novoaleksandrovka was renamed the city of Melitopol and became the center of Melitopol district. At the end of the 19th century, Melitopol grew significantly due to the grain trade, and in the 20th century became an important industrial center of the region.

In the first decade of independence, the Ukrainian economy experienced a deep crisis, which fully affected the economy of Melitopol. The enterprises of the city were not ready to compete in the global market, especially in the context of a general decline in consumption caused by the crisis. The situation was aggravated by weaknesses in the management system and hyperinflation that occurred in the first half of the 1990s. Enterprises reduced production, and sometimes stopped completely. Produced massive reductions in staff.

In 1842, Novoaleksandrovskaya suburb was renamed Melitopol and assigned the status of a city to it. This was the impetus for its rapid development. Already literally twenty years later, in numerous shops and stores one could buy almost everything.
Later in the city there was a railway and telegraph. From Melitopol it was possible to send a telegram to any corner of Ukraine and Russia, as well as abroad. Trains plied to various cities of the country, as well as beyond its borders.

Future of the city
Currently, the city is not developing so rapidly, but still does not stand still. With the support of the United States Agency for International Development and the United States Peace Corps, a city development strategy has been developed. It can be divided into three main points:

1) improving the demographic situation;
2) the creation of new jobs and wage increases;
3) improvement of living conditions of citizens.
It is important that Melitopol continue its development today and become a prosperous city with comfortable living conditions.
