3.Prioritize the areas to be transformed by the next draft
4.Craft a system to monitor and track the transformation. 
5.Read each compo before marking
6.Strategize - what are the biggest issues are in terms of content and language that need to be dealt with?
7.Mark up those areas appropriately. Qualitative feedback to go on scripts.
8.Marks to go on rubrics. Tick the dimensions on the rubrics (see the WA2 tasksheet)

  • Teacher uses red pen.  The 1st time a mistake is made, she provides a symbol and corrects it. For subsequent mistakes of the same kind, she only identifies them but expects corrections in green. For students who make too many of the same mistakes, she writes “See Me” instead (to coach personally)
  • Students receive marking symbols sheet and use it for every writing assignment. 

Content Issues
  • Teacher diagnoses 5 broad trends that her class exhibits.
  • Teacher prioritizes. 
  • Trends 1-3 can be targeted in Draft 2. Trend 4 may be solved if students fix Trends 1-3. Trend 5 can be left for Draft 3.
  • She assigns each trend in Trend 1 to 3 a highlighter colour.
  • Every time the issue is seen in a script, she uses highlighter to mark up the relevant paragraphs. For Trends that have to do with global issues that affect the whole piece, she draws a large asterisk on the first page in that colour. 
  • She types up a colour legend to explain her colour codes in detail. 
  • She provides other qualitative feedback  where necessary (this may be more specific problems faced by individuals)  

I. Mini-Lesson (Bite-sized explicit instruction)
  • Teacher attacks Trend 3 first, as it is affects more of the writing than the other 2 trends. 
  • She designs an intervention to help students understand the issue and get hands-on practice in rectifying it.
  • She spends 20min on explicit instruction to teach students what Trend 3 is and what problems it creates for readers.
II. Hands-on practice
  • Students move on to hands-on practice. For 25min, they work on a task to demonstrate understanding (e.g. correcting a section where Trend 3 has been identified in Draft 1.)
  • As students complete the activity, teacher circulates to monitor understanding. 
III. Peer sharing and feedback
  • Students trade work with their peers.  For 10min, peers provide feedback in pencil based on the mini-lesson on Trend 3. 
IV. AfL Cycle
  • Teacher reads students’ work and the peer feedback. 
  • She provides targeted feedback about whether the student has fixed Trend 3. 
  • Students who have not demonstrated the appropriate understanding will redo the piece until they have. 
V. Subsequent lesson & drafts
  • Teacher repeats the steps with Trend 2, then Trend 1. 
  • Teacher asks students to write Draft 2, further revising the rewritten sections according to the feedback and getting them to integrate the sections into a coherent piece.
