Metis and Inuit peoples have historically been left out of the Act, which only applies to status Indians, as a result of which these communities have been denied Indian status and the rights that come with it. False ideas of authenticity have resulted from this and non-status Indians who identify as Aboriginal are now excluded from land claims and other accords. Along with imposing severe restrictions on their freedoms, the Act also changed the political systems, cultural norms, and educational systems of Indigenous Peoples. The subjugation and prejudice of Metis and Inuit women has also resulted from it.
