The same feelings of compassion and empathy that make a great school counselor also put them at a higher risk of burnout and compassion fatigue. This puts their physical, emotional, and mental health at risk. School counselors must prioritize their health to ensure they are capable of providing effective school counseling to their students.

Self-care is crucial for school counselors because it helps prevent burnout and keeps them emotionally strong when dealing with challenging student situations. It also sets a positive example for students and supports a healthy work-life balance. By prioritizing their own well-being, counselors can stay effective and fulfilled in their roles.

One strategy I can implement to help alleviate burnout is daily exercise; whether that is a walk around my neighborhood with my children, actually taking a workout class, or yoga in my living room. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress by taking your mind out of the moment and focusing on something else. The endorphins released during exercise also help with stress management.

One way I can combat burnout is by focusing on my faith with daily devotionals and practicing mindfulness. Taking a few moments each morning for devotionals helps me feel grounded and connected, which gives me a sense of purpose before starting my day. Pairing this with techniques to practice mindfulness, like deep breathing or quiet reflection, helps me stay calm and focused, even when things get overwhelming.
