Charlie's first real friend he meets, he is a senior in high school and has a step sister names Sam. Patrick loves the music that Sam picks and truly cares about all of his friends even if they have wronged him.

Sam is Patrick's step sister, who Charlie happens to be in love with. The writing style is very unique and beautiful. The novel deals with heavy topics and it will captivate your attention. Charlie prefers to watch from the sidelines but with his group of good friends he wants to be right in the action. It shows the importance of friendships and relationships, if you make at least one friend then you are doing good. Charlie was in the middle of the hardest time in his life and managed to find people that loved him for who he was and felt excepted. Life moves fast, don't worry about the future, live in the moment and enjoy life as it comes.
Evidence:
Charlie stresses out about his life, sometimes too much, but he eventually learns to enjoy life in that moment with help from his friends and his realization that its going to be okay. 
4. Learning to Love Yourself and Others
It is difficult to accept who you are if society constantly rejects you because you don't participate as much as the extrovert next to you or you don't have enough friends.
Evidence:
Charlie never had friends and he found the coolest people to hang out with. He also doubted himself and thought poorly of himself but once he started to be himself everyone loved him. He is the epitome of wallflowers, he finds almost annoying qualities about himself and sometimes feels uncomfortable in his own skin.
5. Trust
Trusting someone is very difficult especially when others have broken our trust many times before.
Evidence:
Charlie opens up once he sees that people will open up to him but that isn't until later when he is comfortable with people.
