1. At the beginning of school year I will send home a survey that collect information about the parents background.
2. Inside the classroom I will create a wall with the flags of every students culture and place them in a world map with a small picture of every students.
3. Every month we will select a country and that family or the students from that country will come to class dress as their country and talk about their culture. They will show and tell about objects they bring.
4. Students will se a video of each country and will talk about their experience to the class.
5. Doing so will help expose students to a deeper understanding of the world around them. Students will learn that we live in a vast world and that their own community is just a tiny cog in this world. I would suggest that after modeling this for several days that students would begin a rotation where each student would be responsible for presenting a current event on a topic of their choice (with some overview from the teacher). Students will also begin to understand that the challenges that they face in their own lives are minuscule when compared to the challenges faced by citizens throughout the world. 

Secondly, I would ensure that the classroom library was well stocked with titles representing various regions and cultures throughout the  world. It would be helpful to work with the school librarian to ensure a rich and diverse selection.Books provide a window into the world and by exposing students to a rich assortment of books we open our students' minds to a greater understanding of the world around them. 

A third suggestion would be to ensure that geography and world issues are made a part of the curriculum. Too many schools have decided that geography is a topic that does not fit in the current curriculum. But our students need a full understanding of the world around them and that starts with a full understanding of different parts of the world. I would augment this with study of different regions and countries.
