I've very little experience of professional photography. I get excited by every opportunity to capture a moment, 9/10 through my Huawei doing all of the work for me. Sometimes the first take is the photo I'm most happy with, and sometimes I don't appreciate the beauty of a photo until later. By taking the photo authentically and with applied knowledge and skill, I'd like to think that feeling would be experienced on a much greater scale.

It's also another medium of story telling. When travelling, I was drawn to both sketching moments and taking photographs - this by large made the content of my diary for the year I spent away, and I never get bored on viewing.

Some differences between the different camera types, and the benefits of each.

Setting the mode dial to manual, rather than auto. Familiarising with the anatomy of the camera, discovering the exposure indicator in viewfinder and how to capture a photo by changing the position of the tilt indicator.

Learning some of the language for each body part e.g., body cap and shutter release.

RAW files which contain everything (and are therefore bigger files) they allow for editing and don't lose the high quality image. I'll be using RAW image format, this allows me to adjust white balance setting on my computer after shooting.

Some take away info:

ISO and White Balance

ISO

ISO is the setting which will brighten or darken a photo. Higher the ISO, the brighter the photo. This can compound the photo and cause noise (grain) if ISO is too high. Images, instead, can be brightened through longer shutter speed.

2. White Balance
Can cause undesirable colour to images. Colour temperature, warm and cool for example shaded areas can appear blue. White balance neutralises the colour temperature to give natural colour to the image.

Aperture controls the amount of light entering the camera. Smaller the number, the larger the aperture (larger sized gap, lets lots of light e.g., f/1.4. This is measured in seconds, or fractions of seconds and are described as fast or slow.

ISO controls the sensitivity of the cameras sensor. The ISO increases or decreases the brightness of a photo. It determines how much light is needed to capture an image.
Ethical considerations of photo manipulation

Digital photography and photo editing software, such as Adobe Lightroom or Apple Photos, has allowed for distortion of reality which can be so subtle the viewer is unaware of changes. Whilst this is an art form, ethics begin to arise when photo manipulation in a certain context leads the viewer to believe an untruth. Manipulation of photos can become complicated as they alter perception and can change the story of the photograph.

In an aesthetically driven world of social media, it could be argued whether it is right to alter a portrait to enhance perceived attractiveness, or in journalism where photographs are perceived to be an accurate account, but could portray an altered story through manipulation of the original photograph, whereby viewers are then deceived of the true reality.

As a beginner photographer, before even taking the photo, I've already began to manipulate interpretation of what the eye can see, by the camera I use, the choice of focal length, aperture and shutter speed, which change the content of the photo, depth of field and motion.

The possibilities in photo manipulation are limitless, it is just a matter of asking at what point does aesthetics violate our code of ethics? It ultimately comes down to a set of values, morals, beliefs and personal preferences.
