Various research suggests that some people in Japan feel lonely and this is a significant contributing factor to their mental health. Research proves that strong social networks act as a protective barrier for mental health.

An app that uses an algorithm to find you weekly/fortnightly events to attend, based on your demographic information and personal interests. The app will be sponsored by a mental health provider and these are the people that will run the events. The goal of the app is to fight isolation and loneliness by building community

https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASL704WVNL70UBQU00N.html

This newspaper illustrates how isolation affects mental depression in Japan. It explains the two traits of Japanese culture. One of them is that Japanese people tend to maintain the relationship that they do not want in order to maintain the harmony within the group in which they belong to. As a result, they tend to make no effort to understand people from outside or different cultures and become poor at flat communication. This is how isolation can happen.
In addition, Japan is not very familiar with churches that meet regularly, civic organizations, and other activities. Japan ranks 101st out of 149 countries in terms of social capital, which refers to the level of human connections and trust. This is the lowest among developed countries. I fear that the recent trend to glorify solitude, saying that "being alone is enough" and "I don't need connections," will exacerbate the loneliness among Japanese people.

Social isolation is the objective separation from others while loneliness is the subjective feeling of being alone or isolated. The results of the study suggested that social isolation decreased between 2020 and 2021 but loneliness increased. Interesting to note that the subjective feeling of being alone may not correspond with the objective reality

The links to Japanese culture described here is fascinating, as it appears that social/civic activities are underdeveloped. Purely social groups do not seem to be emphasised or perceived as valuable in Japanese society. The idea that solitude is glorified is another root cause for isolation. I hope that our app will be able to challenge this thinking and allow people to see the benefits of belonging to a group

Volunteering can have positive mental health benefits for those that volunteer and those that are the recipients of the volunteer work.
