Children in the Industrial Revolution were required to go to school because rising industries wanted more intelligible workers. This had a positive effect because more children were growing up with an education rather than not going to school in their entire life. Education was established as mandatory for children up to the age of 10 (Fenn). Schools let the younger children be educated and be able to work once they're older.

It was very popular in the Industrial Revolution for children to be hired to work because they were cheap and due to their small size they were ideal for tasks in smaller spaces (Child Labor: Laws & Definition - History). Children faced dirty and unclean work environments and payed them much less than an adult working the same job. Children working died often very early due to disease and overall unsanitary conditions!

Women were allowed to work during this time period because they needed to financially support themselves or their family. They faced harsh working conditions and unsanitary work stations with barely any breaks. With women working, throughout the years the ability for women to work more jobs has impacted how things are today. In this picture there is a young girl and an older pregnant women both working in an unsanitary and laborious industry.

The Spinning Jenny is a machine used for spinning wool and cotton which was an industry popular with women. The machine was first made by James Hargreaves in 1770 (Brittanica). This machine was very significant because it fastened the pace of spinning threads by letting it do eight at once. Despite being a genius invention at the time the women who worked in the textile industry feared the labor demand would decrease and no longer need as many women to work therefore causing major unemployment after women were just allowed to work (Skylid).

Children were put to work as early as the age of four years old (McLean) they were put into coal mines because they were small and easy to work in tight spaces. Conditions in the coal mines were very dangerous for children and death was common. Many children lived less than 25 years (McLean).
