  • Kurt was born on November 11th, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana. 
  • Kurt had German heritage, but because of World War One, his parents abandoned all German culture, causing them not to teach Kurt German or educate him about his German background
  • When the great depression hit, his father's successful architecture business collapsed and he was put in public school, unlike his two siblings(Bernard and Alice) who were sent to private school
  • His mother struggled with depression after their economic declined and tried to submit short stories into magazines, but had no success
  • He majored in biochemistry in college due to pressure from his family, which he had little success with
  • During college he wrote in the newspaper and had a column called “innocents abroad”
  • He was a member of Reserve Officers' Training Corps but because of poor grades and his satirical newspaper articles, he was taken out
  • He enlisted in the army in  March 1943
  • His mother committed suicide 3 months before he went to Europe with the army
  • On December 22nd he was captured with about 50 other American soldiers and was sent to Dresden where he survived the bombing of Dresden
  • When he got back he married his high school girlfriend, Jane Marie Cox

  • Many people view Kurt’s work very highly.  It has many concepts such as PTSD that was not talked about very much before his book was published.  English classes all over the country analyze his works to understand better the atrocities of the world.
