Omatsu writes: “Keywords are terms, concepts, and ideas that emerge as themes of a period, reflecting vital concerns and changing values. For Asian Americans in the 1980s and 1990s, the keywords are “advocacy,” “access,” “legitimacy,” “empowerment,” and “assertiveness.”” (305) Omatsu suggests 21st century activists take up the keywords “compassion,” “solidarity,” and “commitment.” (325) Do you agree? What are keywords of the 2020s? Why? Can we suggest alternate keywords that are based on our goal of stabilizing Chinatown?

Throughout the piece, Omatsu cites the historical rise of young professional class Asian Americans as a problematic/complicated development for an Asian American movement rooted in the multifaceted issues of low-income working class Asian communities. Do you agree? Disagree? What can be done?
