This is the type of response I'm looking for to the Article of the Week. It need not be multiple paragraphs, but it should be thorough, sophisticated, and well-written. Just throwing down any random response will not work.

The USA and its terrorist issues have always been a ‘double-edged sword’ due to the fact that any actions taken will hold both positive and negative results. If the US were to go after ISIS, it would only increase conflicts with Iraq and Syria, with war on the horizon if not already. If the US were to not go after them, social media would talk non-stop on how we are not trying to help captive United States citizens, allowing ISIS to threaten our country and surely much more.

Fighting always seems to be the inevitable answer when it comes to conflicts but is sadly to be expected with the beheading of jouranlist James Foley. I personally believe it would be a better idea for the US to not go after ISIS and refrain from making any more conflicts between the two countries. As sad as it sounds, trying to rescue the captives is somewhat a waste of money, men, and resources (assuming that all the captives aren’t important figures and/or hold no vital information). It would only cause more problems that may very well end tragically.

I don't believe or support his decision in kneeling to the flag, it will just cause more problems for the black community itself. There are already unarmed innocent black men being killed just for what they look like and for their race and I just think he's adding on to it.

The end of the article explains how some things from the theory do not quite add up, such as temperature changes. Things in this research are very believable, but I am no paleontologist and this is only one article. More research is found every day about the world and until this theory is fully supported by facts, I do not believe in it. A few years ago the extinction was due merely by the asteroid itself, now the cloud of smoke, and I'm sure in the distant future, they will find that it will be even another theory as to what caused it.

I do not agree with this theory in the slightest sense. Theories about creations are filled with gigantic holes that none can explain. The biggest of such is the Big Bang Theory. This theory states that there was nothing at all, but a bunch of chemicals just popped out of nowhere and created the universe. The idea of this defies common logic. Nothing cannot create something. And this theory of "a meteor killed the dinosaurs" is far fetched and stupid and once again defies logic. If a meteor that size and effect impacted earth it would have completely destroyed earth and everything on it and the impact crater would still be there. And if it did destroy the dinosaurs, how come there are still dinosaurs such as crocodiles and alligators and sea creatures such as plaeosaurs (rumored) still exist? Its very far fetched to think that something that catastrophic destroyed billions of animals and left no trace of impact and the fact that our planet is still here and able to sustain life. The real reason why the dinosaurs are extinct is The Great Flood of the bible. There is evidence that the entire earth was submerged by water at one point and that the continents were moved from immense amounts of pressure (the weight of the water covering the earth.) and it makes sense that certain animals such as crocodiles and other prehistoric creatures are still here, because God had them put into the ark. Another thing that makes sense is that the oldest structures and artifacts in the world are found in and around the area that Noah and his family landed after the flood waters descended.

Although dinosaurs are extinct, the previous history of dinosaurs on Earth remains a mystery. So what exactly cause this mass extinction? It's a question that many paleontologists have been pondering. There have been many theories regarding how dinosaurs died. For instance, speculations such as volcanic activity, climate change, and limited food supply have all been taking into consideration with the disappearance of dinosaurs. Now, scientists are stating that dinosaurs died from an asteroid hit. Personally, I do not agree with this theory because I believe that it's just another supposition. If an asteroid did hit the Earth, I believe that it would cause serious damage but not to the extent of killing dinosaurs off the face of the Earth.

I agree with the theory that the soot that was deposited on land caused the extinction. If the soot blocked out sunlight and rain how could the dinosaurs do everyday things. In the passage it says "the layer of soot would have blocked about 85% of sunlight from reaching Earth and cut rainfall by nearly 80%, creating near-drought conditions. And because the sunlight decreased so drastically, temperatures would have plunged by up to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. If temperatures fell rapidly how would the dinosaurs adjust and grow with the coldness that came about. I agree with the theory that the soot was the cause of extinction and that dinosaurs roamed the Earth many years ago.

The soot was in through out most of the air blocking 85% sunlight and 80% of rainfall. Having harsh weather and causing the temperature to drop drastically.

I do not agree with the theory stated in the passage. There are many reasons why I do not agree with the theory. The main reason is because is was so long ago and we will never really know what happened. That is why people are paid so much money in funding to try and find out what really happened. Another reason why I don't agree is because other studies have proven the theory wrong. Like the fact that the sulfuric acid particles "don't hang around for very long after an asteroid impact." The soot theory just does not have a solid enough background to stand upon. This is my opinion on week nine's topic of dinosaurs

The theory of a asteroid hitting the earth and killing the animals of that time doesn't seem possible. The reason I don't agree is because there would have been some type of evidence, such as a crater, in the Earth's soil. A 6-mile-wide chunk of rock slamming into the would have left some type of major, permanent impact on the planet. Another reason I disagree is because the impact from the asteroid would've destroyed all life on Earth, not just the dinosaurs and other larger animals. There had to be another reason for the extinction of the dinosaurs. As the article states, " Crocodilians, birds, small mammals, and most ocean creatures survived .." meaning if an asteroid hit the Earth at a high speed the water temperature would've increased. But being that most ocean creatures lived then that theory probably didn't happen.

Only because there is no evidence to explain that there was ever an asteroid that hit Earth and killed the dinosaurs. I believe that there were dinosaurs at one point because there is very much evidence showing us that there were, such as their bones. There is no huge crater or any evidence really that an asteroid had anything to do with the killing of the dinosaurs. Honestly, they probably jut died off because of no food or something similar to that. I do not believe that an asteroid had anything to do with the deaths of the dinosaurs.

There is cold hard facts proving the existence of dinosaurs many years ago. The creatures came in many different shapes and sizes. The real question is how did they all die? Some researchers base their whole career on finding out what happened to the animals. There are many different theories as to what happened to the beast. The range from earthquakes to volcanoes. In my opinion I do not believe that volcanoes killed hundreds or thousands of dinosaurs. I believe that they either became sick and started dying off or they killed eah other and could not reproduce fast enough.

I disagree with the statement that dinosaurs died from a cloud of smoke. It has been proven many times before this new theory, that dinosaurs died from an asteroid. If the cloud of smoke killed all these animals, would it not have killed everything else? The new theory simply does not many any sense. To take out such large creatures I do not think that a cloud of smoke would do the trick necessarily. Even if it did happen, why did all of them die? Would there not be any that survived? Therefore, I do not agree with this new theory.

Some dinosaur extinction theories postulate that dinosaurs died from the cold, while others suggest the beasts died from the heat, or else it was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. One theory hypothesises that the climate became too wet, while another that the climate dried out to kill off the dinosaurs. The dinosaurs could have starved to death or died from overeating. Or their extinction may have been caused by a nutritional problem, such as flowering plants not providing the proper nutritional balance. Or the flowering plants could have gotten poisons that killed the dinosaurs. A variant on the poisoning theme is that poisonous insects evolved and stung the dinosaurs into extinction. Others thought the water became poisonous with chemicals. Another ingenious twist is that butterflies and moths evolved and the larvae stripped the plants of leaves causing the herbivores to pass away, bringing on the extinction of the carnivores. Another theory suggests the herbivorous dinosaurs simply changed their eating habits to a less suitable diet, causing the distinction of all the dinosaurs.

Considering humans were not around at the time of the time of the dinosaurs, millions of years away, in fact, there's no knowing of what exactly did kill off the dinosaurs. It could've been the asteroid Chicxulub, or the smoke theorists believe resulted because of the asteroid. There was a study published about sulfuric acid particles and that they don't stick around too long after the asteroid hits. But if they did, wouldn't it destroy all life on earth, and not just the dinosaurs? It's for these reasons, I disagree with the passage.

I don't think that soot caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. There were obviously many factors when it came to how did the dinosaurs meet their demise, such as, the is concrete proof that a asteroid hit the earth during the dinosaurs rein. A huge crater that fits the size of the asteroid was discovered in the Gulf of Mexico and the soil at the crash site dates back to the Cretaceous period. Also there were actually many dinosaurs that survived the initial impact, however most of the vegetation on earth had been reduced to ash and because of this the herbivore dinosaurs being so big could not find the food they needed and starved to death. The earth was shrouded in darkness for years and with no sizeable food source, any large carnivores that might have been left died off as well .

Personally I do not believe in this theory. I feel that the people who came up with that theory should find a new profession. "The resulting layer of soot that enveloped the globe would have been just the right thing to kill the dinosaurs and most other land-dwelling creatures"... I do not agree with that statement either. I can not comprehend how soot would cause the extinction of an entire species. To be honest, why is this subject still being discussed?

I do not agree that the Dinosaurs became extinct by soot covering the sky preventing sunlight from shinning through. There could be a number of reasons as to why the Dinosaurs became extinct, for example, the world could have frozen and all the vegetation and water could have frozen over. Another example could be that volcano's erupted and burned the Dinosaurs alive, or could have burned all the vegetation and they could not find food. Finally, when the Earth's plates started to move then the animals were in the wrong place at the wrong time and could have died.

If so then all animals would no longer exist because their breed would have been wiped and they couldn't have evolutioned into the animals that we have today. The soot from a volcano also does not sound right because how could the marine animals that lived with the dinosaurs also become extinct. How could one volcano eruption wipe out all living creatures? It doesn't make sense together, there needs to be more research.

In the passage it said "the layer of soot would have blocked about 85% of sunlight from reaching Earth and cut rainfall by nearly 80%, creating near-drought conditions." It just makes no sense to me how other animals could have possibly lived through that. I get that their diets are different, but just like you had dinosaurs who were herbivores and carnivores you had other animals that were herbivores and carnivores. The theory just does not make since to me at certain points. Sunlight is what runs our ecosystem so blocking that much, some plants had to die, other animals besides dinosaurs had to die. With that being said I don't think we will ever understand how dinosaurs truly went extinct.

I think that their hypothesis is correct. The smoke clouds that was produced after the asteroid hit, caused the dinosaurs demise. Freezing temperatures can kill the smallest of animals and even the largest. Reptilians cannot survive in those types of extreme temperature. They are cold blooded creatures that rely on the heat from the sun to survive.

I think scientists are wrong about the asteroid theroy. It's so absurd how make all these abnormal explanations on how dinosaurs are extinct when it could have just been as simple as they ran out of food source or they had killed off each other.

I believe the dinosaurs died because they could not adapt to what was changing around them. Like the weather or the ground. I believe everything was getting colder and they didn't migrate so they just died there food died and so did the dinosaurs

I think there are so many theories out there that are being thrown around about dinosaur extinction , I believe know ones know what really happened are what caused the dinosaurs to be extincted. Although i take consideration of the theory that said an asetorid was smashed in to the earth . This could possibly be true or take part of what happened . Most people do not really pay attention to the fact that dinosaurs were huge and that they had to have large variety of food meals to stay alive . What if they just were being token care of or the weather was not fitting their status . These hypothesis could all be an answer or a part of the answer that we are looking for .

My opinion n dinosaur extinction is there was no choice for them to go extincted. As we look at the world today and how everyday the world is changing the dinosaurs would not be able to survive. First off people are cutting down more and more trees everyday and so for those dinosaurs who ere omnivores they would probably be out of luck and then humans kill animals because you know we have to eat to so if a dinosaur who ate ate certain animals would also be out of luck .
