It explained how criminals can easily access your information by using low-interest credit card scams to steal your personal information. The scammers called different people under the guise of being their bank or credit card company. Call centres are set up to operate specifically to steal people’s identities. The journalist from Marketplace went to individuals that had their identity stolen, the people in the video were not aware of it. Also, Marketplace set up credit monitoring and fraud alert with both TransUnion and Equifax. Their findings showed that monitoring and fraud alerts are not 100% guaranteed to contact you in the event someone opens an account in your name. The video spoke about stolen information being sold on the dark web. Lastly, Marketplace talked about a preventative measure that is only available in America called credit freezing.

I chose this video to show the implications of identity theft and how it can harm you financially. The most interesting part of this video was the credit freezing. If credit freezing is applied, it locks the scammers out from accessing your information. This service is available in America for free, even though Canada has plans on having it but has not proclaimed it.

SIM card swapping happens when a scammer takes control of your mobile phone by porting your phone number to another phone provider to gain access to your email and other information. This scam happened to an individual named Denise in the video, which she is a victim of a scam. Global News explains that two critical errors make this scam work, posting too much information on social media and that the call centre did not for the unique code.
I chose this video because it explained a newer type of scam that has been happening recently. The person who stole the ID was able to get a temporary paper copy to go along with the expired driver’s licence, which became a valid ID. She then proceeded to open several bank accounts at different banks and was able to withdraw all of the victim’s money from her bank account.
I chose this video because even when you think you are safely throwing out your information, someone can still obtain it. One piece of useful information from this video is how the fraudster was eventually caught using facial recognition. The Q&A focused on identifying victims of identity theft and ways to prevent people from becoming a victim, and what to do if your identity is stolen. He mentioned that identity theft is more prevalent than 15 years ago. Now, the internet is a main source of fraud because your information is more easily accessible.

I chose this video because it was short but quite informative about the subject. This video was a quick and easy video to watch to understand the risk of identity theft. One thing I found interesting is that Jeffery explaining how to minimize the damage if your identity was stolen by using paid credit monitoring services to protect your accounts.

I chose this article because the information given is on the Ontario government website. It is an all-in-one guide that provides knowledge on the subject of identity theft. The most useful piece of information was that the article shows the many ways you can protect your identity at all times, including: at home, shopping, and online.

The article also explains how brutal ID theft can be, as fraudsters can take your information without warning.

I chose this article because it speaks about the current climate of identity theft in the pandemic. A useful piece of information in this article is about the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit scam, as the year-end tax form is coming up and reviewing for abnormalities.

Two major ones are medical identity theft and child identity theft.
I chose this article as it shows insight into identity theft. She provided statistics on identity theft and how the trend is likely to continue as technology becomes more sophisticated. I chose this article as it shows how one's identity can be stolen and replicated for the man purpose to commit fraud and for financial gain. One point that stuck out was the fraudsters created a business just for distributing fraudulent gift cards. Researching identity theft as a whole was interesting. One thing that surprised me but at the same time was not shocking was a good amount of information dealing with identity theft online. I understand that the world is more digitalized, but sometimes you never understand the scope of things until you research it.

2. Provide a real-life example of how this topic is relevant or interesting for you.
This is a topic that is relevant to everyone because you never know who can take your identity and use it for malicious reasons. Recently, I had my information stolen, as my school email was hacked and someone used it to send Covid19 links to over 40+ people on my contact list. I had to change my password to make it more unique.

3. If you could pass on your knowledge to a family member or friend, what do you think is the most important thing to pass on?
If I were to pass on knowledge to a family member or friend is to be vigilant with your information. There are too many types of ways to gain your identity whether it is online or in person. Remembering who and where your information is going is important to keep your identity safe.
