I learned a lot about myself this week. I noticed that the more I am involved in an activity the more I retain from it. I like how we implement the prepare, teach one another, ponder and prove. I enjoyed all the readings especially Elder Eyring's talk A steady, Upward course. God has a plan for each and everyone of us. Without him we would be lost. We need to be constantly moving upward and onward towards Christ and towards God. Change is not a bad thing. Change is a positive thing. Without hard times we wouldn't be able to fully appreciate the good in our lives. I was able to fully understand myself more this week as well as God's plan for each of us. As we strive to be our best selves we will be able to be who God not only wants us to be but who he needs us to be. Names are important, people and relationships matter. We need to love all of God's children. We are all working for the same eternal goal so why not work together.

Just because a child has a disability it doesn't define who they are. I relate to this on a personal level. I have two autistic nephews and they are very bright but sometimes that gets over looked because of their physical restrictions. We as teachers need to look inward into their hearts and souls.

One thing from Elder Eyring's talk that stood out to me was that graduates of BYU Idaho, according to prophecy, can and will be natural leaders. Something that I have a difficult time with is participation and leading groups, let along classrooms, without being nervous. But knowing this prophecy, that graduates of BYU Idaho will become legendary, and that we will become natural leaders, is very comforting to me.

This week, I learned about the importance of learning. I have always loved learning, but I especially love the fact that as we learn, we are given the opportunity to become better and make more informed decisions, guided by the Holy Ghost. Sometimes, we are inspired to be a little better, and sometimes, we are asked to do things that may seem odd or difficult at the time. Our Heavenly Father knows what is best for us, and ultimately, trusting in Him and exercising our faith is going to be the way that we will come closer to Him as we keep His commandments.

Something that I learned this week from the syllabus and from attending class that will stay with me is how important it is to help all of our students feel that they are important and valued in our classroom. I appreciated the time our teacher took to learn our names and make sure that we knew each other's names so that we weren't just another part of the crowd. Including all students, no matter their background, or different needs will help them to feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opening up so that we as educators can better address their needs. That is something that I want to incorporate into my future classroom.

I enjoyed the talk by president Eyring. Specifically, the part where he spoke about frugality stuck out to me. Frugality is a principle that, when practiced, helps us to remain humble. It also helps us remain open to the spirit. As teachers we need to be constantly aware of our students and be seeking the gift of discernment to know what it is they need.

I have always thought of "my education" as pertaining to me and my benefit. But when our teacher said that our said that my education is NOT about me, it made me taken aback. As a potential teacher, I realized that I can't just go through the class to be done with it. I NEED to go through the class to learn, educate myself, so I can have a sound background in various topics to teach my future students to the best of my ability. My future students are added onto my motivation to succeed.

There were 2 main points that I really liked from this week's lesson. The first is the idea of setting realistic expectations in teaching, ensuring that we do not try to expect more of our students than we are capable of first doing ourselves (such as requiring them to sit still and stay quiet for extended periods of time each school day). I thought this was a good reminder to make sure that there is a point/purpose to each activity that I intend to have my students complete. The second point that I really liked was the idea that you must first be an effective learner before you can become an effective teacher.

Michelle Grooms
What I have learned this week is that to be able to teach we have to be willing to be taught. Just like how what made Christ the ultimate teacher was because He was willing to learn first, so must we. If we learn all we can, we will be able to teach better than we could have before. I hope this stays with me for the rest of my life and I never reach a point where I believe I have learned everything. Because through this I will be a better teacher and because that would be a pretty silly belief.
