The Thompson appears on only one album track, Carlos Garnett’s, “Let This Melody Ring On,” from the album of the same name (he also takes it on one Roberta Flack tour, using it on a few tunes).

Anthony reaches arguably his creative peak on the pop side in recording three albums with Chaka Khan: Chaka (1978), and ESPECIALLY Naughty (1980) and What Cha’ Gonna Do for Me (1981). In an unprecidented move, producer Arif Mardin allows Anthony to take the tracks hiome on cassette tapes and gives him three months to create the bass lines. Anthony spends much of his time drving around in his car, listening to the songs and composing the bass lines in his head. The results are staggering, on tracks like “Clouds,” “Move Me No Mountain,” “What Cha’ Gonna Do for Me,” “Night Moods,” “We Got Each Other,” and “Heed the Warning.” To get the low range on his Fender “Career Girl” he tunes the bass down two whole steps, adding epoxy cement and a serated kitchen knife to raise and file down the nut (plus adjusting the truss rod and bridge), to help with the tension.
