Again, my background is in Hearing Loss, so I struggle with these principles. I would still like to include word for word text for all spoken dialogue. I continued to scan at the picture, and then the text to make sense of the content. It's almost as if my eyes and brain were working twice as hard! It's much easier to understand and visualize if they are closer together. 

As far as word length, I would say less is more. Again, it's less scanning. You can read and then match it up with the graphic more efficiently.

I think in general the word length should be kept short. Too much text would strain the working memory capacity. If text is at the bottom of the screen it is the last thing a viewer notices and the viewer reading that screen is constantly looking from bottom to top. It gets dizzy and distracting when trying to have your eyes follow many places on the screen.
