This first stage is called Trust vs Mistrust. Within this stage the child will experience trust or mistrust that the child's basic needs are met. This will either form a child who trusts or does not trust.
This is a picture of me, Sonja P. when I was in this stage. I believe in the first picture I am a few weeks old. Then in the second picture I am a few months old.
When I was in this stage I experienced trust. Whenever I was hungry, I was fed. This established trust and allowed me to move on from this stage successfully.

The second stage is autonomy vs shame. Within this stage children obtain a sense of independence and needs to be encouraged. Without this the child will have self-doubt and not successfully pass this stage.
This next picture of me is while I was in the autonomy vs shame stage. I was around two years old in this picture which means I am right in the middle of the age requirement for this stage.
Within this stage of life, I experienced both autonomy and shame. However, I believe that I may have come out of this stage with self-doubt even though I was encouraged. When I was this age my brother was born, meaning I no longer was the center of attention. I felt as I was not as loved which brought about shame and potential self-doubt.

This next stage is called initiative vs guilt. During this stage the child takes initiative in some activities and begins to feel guilty when they are not behaving or a line is crossed.
In this picture I am in the stage of initiative vs guilt. I was almost 4 years old.
Within this stage I experienced both Initiative and Guilt. This picture represents an example of this. When my brother and I were bored we decided to make a cake. So I took the initiative to get out the flour and proceed to make a mess. However, when we were caught I felt guilty which is why I began to cry. Since my actions were not overly controlled I was able to complete this stage successfully.

Industry vs inferiority is the next stage in Erickson's Development theory. This stage involves the child figuring out their self confidence and may feel inferior if their self-esteem is low.
In this picture I believe I am seven (maybe 8). This would put me in the range of ages for industry vs inferiority.
Within this stage I experienced many things that made me feel inferior. Though I was diagnosed with SMA at a young age, I did not fully experience the effects until this stage. Like many young children in second and third grade, I developed a "crush". After I confessed my feelings I was told that since I was in a wheelchair, he would never like me back. This instilled a sense of inferiority.

This stage is when a child starts to question and experiment with identity roles. This is where the sense of belonging is found.
In this picture I was 16. This puts me in the stage of identity vs confusion.
Throughout these years I struggled to find which group or clique I belonged to. Since I am a social person, I always was friendly with just about everybody. Then I became close to only a few people and created this sense of belonging for myself.

Some people may develop intimate relationships with a significant other.
This is a picture of my grandma, Jeannette during this stage. If this is not done one becomes stagnant.
In this picture my grandmother is in her early 60s.
Within this stage my grandmother was able to generate a family and became a contributing member of society. If the person is satisfied with their life, they will form a sense of integrity and if they are not happy they will form a sense of despair.
In this picture my grandma is 65 years old.

She has accomplished many things in her life. As she reflects on the past, she sees that she has gained wisdom and continues to live her life with integrity not despair.
