Louis' piece, Kanaka Hawai'i Cartography (2017), stretched my thinking about epistemology. Louis encouraged readers to consider the vast plurality of knowledge systems. Here are a few of my take-aways as I consider knowledge sources and contemplate my work in this field.

Ethics of research

Louis helps us to consider ethical decisions that we make as researchers. She points out that academia often deem research as the intellectual property of the researcher. Louis resists this notion as she decides to honor Aunty Moana as a key collaborating participant by deciding how far her knowledge could spread considering her stories and audience. Although my research may not have as deep of roots, it makes me consider how I can best honor the knowledge of my participants and the knowledge of those before me. I wondered, "Would I go as far as her...to ask each time if I could reveal a certain story or idea?" Although I am not certain of my answer, Louis opened up my eyes in the various ethical decisions and considerations I may have to think about in the future.

Thinking with Theory

Similar to my classmates, I read this text with Jackson and Mazzei's (2017) work in mind. It reminded me to be flexible throughout the research process, so we can be open to new ideas and 'thresholds.' Although our research is aimed to find answers, we must be comfortable with the uncomfortable. Knowledge sources are complex and variable. We must avoid 'plugging in' as we should have a broader purpose in mind. I admit that I often find myself hoping that my research will eventually 'fit-in' and support the various theories and ideas in our field. It helps to think of my work as one that broadens the research landscape. I am reminded that there is no 'right or wrong,' and my research will represent one of the many disciplinary lenses.
