The scene opens with a series of poems and a message reading "sunrise", an appropriate start to a story. Our protagonist Tayo is introduced, struggling in bed with memories of his home, and of his time in the Philippines. One image specifically sticks out to him of a group of Japanese soldiers he was forced to kill. Tayo feels a sense of connection to these soldiers because they reminded him of his uncle. The thought of his uncle being amongst those he was forced to kill haunts him.

**EXPOSITION**

Tayo continually grows ill alone on his ranch, though he enjoys the isolation. He begins to associate his feelings with a 'white fog' and even goes as far as to claim that he was 'dead just not yet buried'. A white fog so well articulates the identity crisis Tayo is facing. As he reminisces with an old friend named Harley, he realizes how much the war has truly taken from them and so many others.

**RISING ACTION**

When our protagonist first moved back to Laguna from Los Angeles, Tayo consulted with his family about his wellness. His grandmother advises him to visit a medicine man named 'Ku'oosh' who performs the ritual. Though he warns Tayo the practice isn't always successful, Tayo sees a shift in mood. He gains a more general apathy for life that makes it easier to keep going. This is an important addition to the story because it signifies a common next stage in grief. Tayo is drained and numbed by his past. He now has to move forward.

The story flashes back to the last time Tayo remembers going out with friends. As the men go around sharing their war stories, Tayo adds that his experience couldn't at all compare to that of the white soldiers, as real life picked back up as soon as he removed his uniform. This causes his close friend Emo to become angry at him, which led to a physical altercation between the two. Tayo begins to cry, and the scene cuts back to him and Harley in the shade. The two go back to the bar at which the fight happened, and begin to drink. Meanwhile, Silko intersperses parts of the story of Pa'caya'nyi and his ability to cause the people of his village to turn away from the nature goddess. This story pairs with the dialogue between men mentioning the importance of every element of nature in native culture.

As the men become further intoxicated, Harley begins to speak a little Laguna, and the two are brought back once again to the altercation between Tayo and Emo. Tayo can see the sadistic joy Emo took in killing the Japanese, and it is revealed he lunges at him after a low blow made about his mother liking white men.

Tayo thinks back on a time when he and his cousin Rocky were first attending recruitment. They were the only ones in that session, and Rocky stated that he did it to ensure he could stay with his 'brother'. Tayo remembers this as the first time being referred to as his brother. This part of the story is significant in the way that it contributes to Tayo's sense of safety that he gets from Rocky, especially after being given up by his mother.

Tayo arrives in the town of Gallup and visits another medicine man. He had just been told by Robert that those at the ranch wanted him to seek help. He enters the man's shop and is a bit disturbed to see the array of medicinal items. The man sticks out to him because of his vibrant green eyes. Though Tayo is afraid of what might happen next, he has hope that the medicine man, Betonie, can help him.

Betonie acquaints himself with Tayo and begins the ritual with a series of stories. He tells Tayo that white people were like a plague invented by witches. As he begins the ritual, he also explains the history behind the practice, claiming it was used on a yound boy attacked by coyotes. As Betonie performs the ritual, Tayo enters a slumber and when he is awoken, Betonie continues with another story. This time, of a young, white Mexican girl that was able to help native leaders rid the world of white malintent. Betonie explains to Tayo that the talents of white people are sometimes useful. This part almost seems like an attempt from Betonie to comfort the inner conflict between Tayo's biraciality. It seems like one of the first times he's affirmed with a story that highlights both natives and white people.

**CLIMAX** in my opinion, idk

After the ritual, Tayo is picked up by two of his friends, Leroy and Harley, as well as another woman from a neighboring tribe. He joins them in excessive drinking, and after throwing up feels cleansed emotionally. He notices that he isn't as haunted by the memories of his past, and feels that the first ritual had begun to work.

As Tayo goes to water his horse, he meets a woman who invites him inside for dinner. She tells him the stars are visible. Around this part of the book, Silko also includes the story of Ck'o'yo Kaup'a'ta who stole the rain clouds from the sky and kept them for prisoner. The sun wins back his children from Ck'o'yo Kaup'a'ta. The excerpt almost seems to allude to the point at which Tayo has gained his peace.

When Tayo goes to visit his home reservation, he finds much of the land inhabited by white people. He also sees the cattle of his friend Josiah fenced in, and makes a plan to steal them back in the night. After looking for hours, he begins to lose hope as day breaks, but he is confronted by a mountain lion. The lion stares at him awhile and treads off. As Tayo gets ready to leave, he sees the cattle and directs them toward the hole he had made in the fence. Two workers notice him as he tries to escape, but let him leave when they spot the tracks of the mountain lion. As the men leave, snow begins to fall and Tayo is comforted by the fact that the tracks of the lion will be covered.

Back on the ranch, Tayo begins to resolve some of his previous trauma, realizing that the memories of those he loves and of his home can never truly be gone. He meets the woman he had invited him into her home again, and she gives him his cattle, which she has helped care for.

**FALLING ACTION / CONFLICT CONFRONTATION**

Tayo runs from the police and Emo, until the police give up. However, Emo not so easily continues his pursuit, until Leroy and Harley trick Tayo into getting into a car with them. Whilst running, Tayo notices patterns in the mined uranium that tell him the final stage of the ceremony is in process. Tayo escapes, though both of his 'friends' are killed.

Hello,
I won't include a whole lot of text here since I individually typed in each block, but I hope you enjoyed the composition of my plot break-down. Though it's formatted similar to a timeline, I wanted to emulate a spectrum that highlighted the climax of the story versus its less exciting context. The climax is indicated by the bright orange. Much of the snippets I included were parts in which Tayo was subjected to serious mental metamorphosis. A lot of the earlier points included times at which Tayo had endured severe emotional stress. Others included high-points for our protagonist.
Thanks! -HWT
