Methaqualone is a CNS depressant, meaning that it decreases neurotransmitter signals in the brain and central nervous system. This in turn slows down brain activity, much like alcohol. Another effect of CNS depressants is that they shut down involuntary actions such as coughing. CNS depressants also put their users into a very lethargic state, that prevents them from doing much activity.

Methaqualone is a synthetically-produced drug that has very strong sedative effects. The drug was originally synthesized in 1955 by indian doctors trying to produce medications to help treat malaria. At that time, they were assumed to be a non-addicitive alternative to barbiturates. Quaaludes are taken orally either in tablet or capsule form.

Quaaludes taken in order to put the user in a lethargic state. As mentioned, they are a CNS depressant and so they limit your brain functionality. Users often feel drowsy, and as if they "haven't slept in days" (Methaqualone). A common practice is to take alcohol along with quaaludes, a practice known as getting "luded out".

Since quaaludes are depressants, they pose a threat when taken in excess, or when mixed with other CNS depressants such as alcohol. For this reason, getting "luded out" is extremely dangerous and there are many fatal cases related to this practice, as the quaaludes and alcohol create drug synergism that slows bodily functions down to the point where users can stop breathing. Quaaludes are also highly addictive, and users build tolerance at an alarming rate. Due to this, overdose is very common with quaaludes. Another known side effect is that it causes issues with the gastrointestinal system.

In the 1960s and 70s, Methaqualone was commonly prescribed to help treat insomnia and anxiety. This drug was very widely prescribed, as it was perceived to be less addictive and dangerous compared to barbiturates. Today, there is no medical use for quaaludes, and it is a Schedule I drug.
