Jannetje Johanna Schaft was a fighter in the Dutch Resistance who went by the code name Hannie. She came from a family heavily involved in social justice and politics, which encouraged her to pursue becoming a human rights lawyer in Amsterdam. There she made many Jewish friends who caused her to oppose Nazi persecution even stronger. She was kicked out of university after refusing to sign the declaration of allegiance to the Nazi's occupying the Netherlands, and instead began her life of resistance.

Hannie vowed to stay human throughout the horrors. She was given missions to kidnap and kill the children of Nazis, but spared them instead as she didn't want to reflect their evil. She also saved many Jewish children by bringing them to hiding places.

Hannie began as a courier, stealing ID cards and providing them to Jews, but her missions soon grew more dangerous. She learned fluent German, distributed illegal communist newspapers "The Truth", executed Nazi officials and collaborators (often with a gun while riding on her bicycle,) and burned down houses and their radical literature.
