The author who is suffering from a mental breakdown, wants to write and have stimulus, yet her husband physician feels her best method of treatment is no stimulation at all. This lack of mental stimulation and isolation adds to the decline of her mental status. This same theme is present in "Undergoing the Cure for Nervous Prostration." The Dr. didn't find anything "wrong" with her, but sent her home to be as "domestic" as possible, and this is what also made her backslide mentally.

Story's Point of View:

In "The Yellow Wallpaper" the author is struggling with deep depression/mental breakdown. She also struggles with being a mother and being married. Her well meaning physician husband is trying to care for her in what he assumes is the best treatment, is really not helpful at all and this drives her into further insanity or mental breakdown. Her husband's method of treatment is three months away in this desolate house and to have rest and relaxation without any mental stimulation at all. He insists their room be upstairs in this room with ugly yellow wallpaper. The author detests the yellow wall paper, but after her extended stay in this estate-like home, and lack of stimulation, she starts to enjoy the wallpaper and develops further psychosis which is manifested through the wall paper. In why I wrote "The Yellow Wall Paper" the author was trying to bring awareness of how this is very unhelpful to patients suffering from this kind of mental illness. In "Undergoing the Cure for Nervous Prostration" the theme is the same as "The Yellow Wallpaper" except the physician was one of the great specialists, of his time, referred the author to the same treatment. Only two hours of stimulation and not to do anything such as writing and painting for the rest of her life, which are things she enjoyed. Following this treatment made her considerably worse. The physician, Dr. S. W. Mitchell had a bias against her family and women in general.

Two Paragraph Personal Reflection:

I can see why this was such a struggle in the author's life and was also a reflection of the sign of the times. Getting married, having children and being domesticated was what was expected. Charlotte clearly wanted more out of life. By not fitting into the mold of societal norm and being forced to adapt, nearly drove her crazy. As a woman in those times, to do anything other than those expectations would be considered crazy in itself.
I wanted children and looked forward to being a mom, but nothing could've prepared me for actual motherhood. A woman has to give up a huge part of herself to care for a family. Even if you are blessed to get an education and a stimulating career, something gives a little on each end. A woman tries to do it all, but eventually has to give up something. I would be misleading if I did not say I too struggled being home all day with children. I began to question my own sanity at times and at times became depressed from the lack of mental stimulation. I cannot say I identify completely to the level of the author, but I can empathize in her situation and have an understanding of her emotional struggle.
