• Here, Hamlet is weighing his options. He is considering the pros and cons of living and dying. "To be or not to be, that is the question" (3.1.1) this line is representative of indecision because Hamlet is considering both life and death. He is stuck between his desire to die and his desire to avenge his father. This is important because a desire is something one strongly wants. This is representative of how juxtaposing desires result in unhappiness because individuals are unable to choose between the two. Hamlet's indecisiveness is driving him mad and ultimately to blame for his lasting unhappiness.

Being held from taking action/making decision can be attributed to fear. The fear of failure/poor decision outcomes more often than not. Not knowing what will come after our decisions, may lead to mental paralysis. This concept is referred to as "Buridan's Ass(donkey)," because when presented two equal piles of hay, a donkey would die due to it not being able to choose. Missing information also plays a factor in indecision. It is impossible to gather enough information to know if a choice is beneficial or a mistake, until after the decision is made.  •In this quote Hamlet delays his plans to kill the king. His decision stems from the fact, he believes it is not the ample time. "And do such bitter business as the day Would quake to look on." Demonstrates Hamlet's intentions, as he would perform a such a wrongdoing that would lead the world in a state of shock. Hamlet has had these intentions, but has yet to act on his intentions. Hamlet avoids taking action by stating: "Soft, now to my mother." Straying away from his goal, or the idea of procrastination is highlighted as he visits his mother. The belief procrastination leads to sorrow, as Hamlet's inability to take action leads him to spiral into madness.

Various soliloquies in the play gives the audience knowledge of Hamlet's inner thoughts. The well renowned "To be or not to be" is a prime example of Hamlet not being able to take action. The proclamation was Hamlet examining the action of killing himself.
