I'm definitely higher on empathy and compassion for others than myself even though I've been trying to change that. In most recent example, I tried to prepare refugee students for fast approaching exams: the complexity of their needs, the high stake context and my limited background in their discipline triggered my inner critic, mounting extra stress and unnecessarily complicating the already difficult situation. Your view of compassion for self and others as central to not only educational processes but also to professional resilience resonates strongly with me.

Care as radical act of resistance subverting neoliberal pressures and demands:-) I can see strong links to Karen's talk on compassion recognition of suffering and active + intentional effort to alleviate it. Positioned this way, critical care challenges emotional rules imposed on universities through growth-seeking capitalism which Katie introduces in her talk and her publication. Making space for care in uncaring institutions is hard labour which brings joy and frustration alike. Katie asks important questions about solidarity boundaries and how we can sustain our acts of resistance. Really looking forward to your talk!

We all have multiple professional identities: some may be embraced and cherished (educator), some imposed (business-oriented service provider), some self-selected (scholar) and some often hidden as seen irrelevant to the work EAP practitioners do (mother, wife, immigrant...). I'm looking forward to hearing more about challenges and joys of colleagues in Hong Kong and how they navigate this multiplicity of roles.
