An imperative aspect of student well-being which needs to be considered nowadays is that bullying extends far beyond the school ground, into the internet and therefore into the homes and minds of students. The issues which arise at home seep into the school ground and it’s important as teachers that we have the skills to address these issues and do what we can to improve student well-being even when they are detached and consumed by the technology behind screens.

There is a correlation between students being bullied online and being bullied in school. Furthermore there is a correlation between being bullied and under performing in the classroom which makes dealing with this issue of online bullying and important one to deal with (Beran & Li, 2008).

An inclusive school is one where all students feel safe, welcome and have equal opportunities to learn (Foreman, 2014). Being safe online ties into this idea that all students should feel safe.

As educators, we can’t assume that our students are technology natives and therefore can use their devices safely and appropriately (Zammit, 2010). We need to educate students on how to use their resources appropriately to better their knowledge, skills and safety (Zammit, 2010) . Giving them the skills to have a positive presence online and the tools to handle sticky situations online can have drastic improvements to their sense of well-being which is a main focus of the Department of Education's student well-being policy (Victorian Education and Training (VET), 2018). This can also contribute to their sense of belonging in that all students can be given access to digital technologies and feel safe when doing so.

The student well-being and learning policy by the Department of Education states that we must provide a safe environment and develop students knowledge and skills to manage their own health and well-being (VET, 2018). By educating the students on how to do this appropriately we can ensure that students are given the tools to manage their own health and well-being.

The policy doesn’t explicitly address the issue of cyber bullying, however addresses issues of bullying in general (VET, 2018). E-safety should be taken into consideration and addressed in the policy.

An important resource for students, teachers and parents is the e-safety website. E-Safety is a website where parents, teachers and students can report many forms of cyber-bullying and actions are taken to stop the bullying. They have the ability to have unwanted photos deleted and also to contact higher powers to deal with police matters. It is important for students, parents and teachers to be aware of what can be done and who they can talk to when issues arise online.

In addition to being a safe place to go to there are resources to use in the classroom which can be useful tools.

Addressing the issues of online safety is necessary to ensure all students feel safe in their environments.
