In Maui, Madeline is able to go shopping for souvenirs, try new foods, snorkel, and even cliff dive without experiencing any negative side effects. All of these activities are typical things people do when on vacation, but it's a new and thrilling experience for her. I chose Khalid's song "8TEEN" because it's about living it up while you're young. When she regains her internet privileges, she tells Olly that she can no longer talk with him anymore because it's too painful to be reminded of a life she'll never be able to have. Madeline confronts her mother with this new piece of information, but her mother insists that she does have SCID. Madeline secretly looks through her mother's old files and records. She discovers that when she was 6 months old, just after her father and brother died had died in a car accident, her mother became obsessed with keeping her safe. Madeline was constantly sick as an infant, so her mother decided that she had SCID without receiving any formal diagnosis. Madeline is shocked to learn that she doesn't have a condition and that she has spent her entire life walled up from the outside world due to her mother's paranoia.
