There was no settlements people were hunters they didn't settle in one they moved around. Then they learned how to farm so they settled beside rivers. The first settlements were called semi-settlements as villagers needed to move to find permeant supply of food. This lead to the creation of villages then towns then cities and as the industrial revolution happened and due to this jobs were created and people moved from the villages to the city.
This lead to cities developing more services like fire stations, police , roads and electricity.
The future of cities in the urban areas cities will have to change to provide food, sanitation and education and find ways not to damage the Earth we live in like renewable energy and vertical buildings.

Large town: a large town are population between 60,000 and 174,999. medium town: population between 25,000 and 59,999. small town: population between 7,500 and 24,999. village or small community: population of less than 7,500.Many large towns have town halls and a marketplace. They have rows of shops and probably more than one large 24hr superstore. You will find places for people to work in large towns, perhaps some offices and factories. These are often on the edges of towns. Town comes from an Old English word that referred to a walled or fenced place, such as a farm, village, or courtyard. Our modern word refers to populated areas with fixed boundaries and a local government. Towns are usually bigger than villages, but smaller than cities.

Village: a group of houses and associated buildings, larger than a hamlet and smaller than a town, situated in a rural area. We can find in a village farming, transportation, animals. A village is a small community in a rural area. A town is a populated area with fixed boundaries and a local government.

Hamlet: A hamlet is a human settlement that is smaller than a town or village. This is often simply an informal description of a smaller settlement or possibly a subdivision or satellite entity to a larger settlement. Sometimes a hamlet is defined for official or administrative purposes. Because of the small size of the settlement, there are usually no buildings which have a central or admninistratrive function. There usually is no church, town hall or pub. Roads and streets in the hamlet do not have names, most of the time. 5-6 families may live there usually within a 2km radius area.

Isolated Dewlling: Isolated dwellings are the smallest kind of human settlements. They are smaller than hamlets and are formed by very few buildings. The whole settlement consists of only 1 or 2 households. The isolated settlement is known as dispersed settlement. Examples of such settlement can be seen in parts of Meghalaya, Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala have this type of settlement.

Dispersed settelment: A dispersed settlement, also known as a scattered settlement, is one of the main types of settlement patterns used by landscape historians to classify rural settlements found in England and other parts of the world. Typically, there are a number of separate farmsteads scattered throughout the area. A variety of factors can contribute to the development of dispersed settlement patterns. Dispersed settlements may emerge, for example, in areas with low population density or where natural resources or economic opportunities are dispersed over a large area.A few examples of dispersed settlements are cottages located on hills, scattered all over the region. Some are found near the hill peaks and others in the hill valleys. The term dispersed settlement refers to a settlement structure in which individual farms and small groups of farmsteads or hamlets occur in a cluster of scattered parcels of land (Farm). The term dispersed settlement is also used for individual farms with a shared cadastral area and legal district.

Linear Settelment: A linear settlement is a (normally small to medium-sized) settlement or group of buildings that is formed in a long line. Many of these settlements are formed along a transport route, such as a road, river, or canal. Others form due to physical restrictions, such as coastlines, mountains, hills or valleys.Linear settlements are often called ribbon developments because they have a long, narrow shape. Settlements with this shape usually grow along a narrow valley where there is little space. They may also be found strung along a road or on either side of a river. The linear form is comprised of buildings along a road, river, dike, or seacoast. Excluding the mountainous zones, the agricultural land is extended behind the buildings. The river can supply the people with a water source and the availability to travel and communicate.linear population a population. distribution which is arranged in a. routes cause settlement to be arranged in a line.

Nucleated Settelment: A nucleated settlement is a type of human settlement pattern characterized by closely clustered or concentrated buildings and structures. In this type of settlement, houses, buildings, and other structures are situated in close proximity to one another, often forming a compact and dense arrangement.
Nucleated settlements are commonly found in urban areas, towns, and villages where population density is relatively high. They are typically organized around a central point or a focal feature, such as a marketplace, a religious institution, or a prominent landmark. This central point often serves as the core or nucleus of the settlement, around which other structures and activities are organized. The concept of nucleated settlement stands in contrast to dispersed or scattered settlements, where buildings and structures are spread out over a larger area with greater distances between them. Nucleated settlements offer several advantages. They facilitate social interaction and community cohesion by bringing people closer together. They also make infrastructure and services more accessible and efficient, as resources can be shared and utilized more effectively in a compact area. Additionally, nucleated settlements can help optimize land use and preserve surrounding natural areas by concentrating development in specific zones. Examples of nucleated settlements include traditional European villages with a central square, a cluster of houses, and a church, as well as modern cities with a dense downtown core surrounded by residential neighborhoods.

26th of September 2023

The four aspects that would affect my choice for living in a settlement are:

1. Water. Because me as a person I drink around 6L of water a day so water is crucial.

Access to water - The ability to access water is extremely important to the development of different settlements as they can use the water for drinking, cleaning and, if viable, a waterway for trade with other settlements

2. Natural Resources. Because most world powers like USA, UK, UAE. Have Oil and Natural gas which m add them crazy rich.

Natural Resources - Availability of natural resources is an important consideration; for instance, access to supplies of wood and stone helps with the building and development of the settlement. Being close to a lake or the sea can provide a plentiful supply of fish.

3. Aspect/Shelter. It’s way better to have mountains, rivers, oceans as natural shelters like France, than just plain open land for anyone to invade like Poland. And also to have good weather like Italy than cold or hot weathers like Iceland or Kuwait.

Aspect/Shelter - Aspect refers to the positioning of a settlement: locations with a good aspect can enjoy more moderate climates, which help settlements to develop. Shelter refers to protection for the settlement: a settlement at the foot of a mountain may be protected from the weather.

4. Function. Because if your land is vulnerable for natural disasters like Japan or The Philippines then building will be more costly and harder to build to ensure safety and functionality.

Function - A final consideration when choosing the location for a settlement is if it’s to fulfill a particular function. For instance, a farming settlement needs access to fertile land for farming, a fishing settlement needs to be near the coast or a lake, and a mining town needs convenient access to the mines. Some settlements are established as satellite towns; this means that they are set to have excellent transport links to larger city.

The most important are access to water, defence, natural resources,aspects/shelters.

Water Access :
We can not live without water because safety and readily available water is important for public health, whether it is used for drinking, domestic use, food production or recreational purposes. Improved water supply and sanitation and better management of water resources, can boost countries' economic growth and can contribute greatly to poverty reduction.

Defense:
First, you can keep your personal injury settlements separate from all other forms of income and keep that money in a separate bank account. This will prevent creditors from being able to take that money away from you in the future. Another option is to use a prepaid credit card.

Natural resources:
Natural resources play an important role in our lives. They are essential to the world’s economic, social and environmental well-being. We rely on natural resources for food, water, fuel, and much more. But beyond their daily utility, natural resources play a significant role in keeping the environment healthy and sustainable.

Aspect/shelter:
Shelter separates people from their surroundings. It provides a place for families to cook, eat, sleep, and raise their children. It protects them from extreme temperatures, strong winds, and storms. Shelter provides privacy and safety from human and animal enemies.

For example Hong Kong changed from economic impact because at first it was a normal settlement but after work and buesnises it improved these days and official mega city and with sky scrapers. And also from Political Impact because the government made buesnises and improved the political and the economy.

Another example is Cultural Impact Mexico it changed in every thing even the city but they still to their cultural celebrations because its essential for them. Political Impact on Mexico was the Spanish ruled Mexico or Aztec but they still got their country back.

Ryan Amr MYP1

In the Opium war in 1842 The British Empire invaded the Qing dynasty, it conquered Hong Kong and won the war. The British saw an advantage to Hong Kong’s strategic location in the South China Sea, so it decided to build a port. They benefited and earned a lot of money during their ruling of the small colony. In 1997 Hong Kong was returned to the PRC, but until 2047 Hong Kong is an autonomous part of China. But now Hong Kong developed drastically after it was handed back, as now it has the most amount of skyscrapers in the world.

Case study 2 - London

London was from a long time developed. But one horrible night in January 26 1666, there was the great fire of London. Many buildings collapsed, but after that London started making and renovated many buildings. Now it’s one of the most populated cities in the world.

Case study 3 - Mexico City

Mexico City, (known before as Tenochtitilan) was built buy the Spanish Empire one a lake. Then when Mexico gained independence from Spain in the early-1800’s it changed the name to Mexico City. Now it’s a megacity with over 15 million people.

So it declared war on the Dutch and successfully occupied the land.

First bullet:
New York was established in 1624 by the Dutch as
“New Amsterdam”. It was established due to the amazing reachability and access to the Atlantic Sea whilst having a good port (mostly around Staten Island). When the Brits rolled in and that stuff everything was the same except the name changed into “New York”. Fast forward to the USA gaining sovereignty and now owning New York nothing changed with the until a century and a half later.

Second bullet:
In WW1 many immigrants decided to move to the USA for quote, “A better life” (don’t know if thats true anymore >:0). So the State of New York decided to turn Ellis Island into an immigration office for all the immigrants (since planes weren’t that popular at that time). It worked. Before Chinese and Italian immigrants moved, and due to the sheer amounts of them there are neighborhoods called “Chinatown” and “Little Italy”. Nowadays most of the immigrants coming to New York and the USA in general are from the MENA region. New York mostly developed around skyscrapers with iconic ones being Chrysler Building, The Empire State Building, World Trade Center (which got bombed in 2001 AKA 9/11 attack), One World Trade Center (the new building that replaced the previously mentioned one), and 111 West 57th Street (AKA the thinnest skyscraper in the world).

Most experts say that countries' pledges are not ambitious enough and will not be enacted quickly enough to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. Paris is also subject to chronic stresses.
