1. Material Culture

Material culture is any physical object, usually something you can touch, that represents a certain culture. The image I took depicts material culture because food is one of the biggest exemplifications of a culture. The beliefs, ideas, recipes, and objects are passed down from generation to generation, and food represents culture so well because it is easy to distinguish different foods by what culture they represent.

2. Norms

Norms are the rules and behaviors that become 'normal' based off of a groups values and expectations. These are the 'unspoken rules' of society that we are all expected to follow. The image that I choose for this concept is the same one I shared in the week 3 discussion post, because I believe that this is a great example in my life of how awkward, yet powerful, it can be to challenge the norm. This experiment truly showed how when you step outside of the norm, some people might look at you differently, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing.

3. Gender Socialization

Gender Socialization is what we are taught at a young age depending on our gender. Girls are taught to be pretty, caring, and motherly, while boys are encouraged to be more tough, competitive, and aggressive. The image I chose is something that shows the way that I was socialized as a young kid. I can still remember when I was younger and I wanted to look like my Barbies, and when I got my first lipstick. It was something that I didn't understand so young was targeted towards me because I was a girl. This shows how, especially at a young age, girls are taught that they are supposed to wear lipstick/makeup, from looking at their parents, mentors, or even their own toys.

4. Stereotypes

Stereotypes are ideas that are universally believed and pushed onto the entirety of a certain group based on their race, religion, economic status, or gender. The image that I have provided is an example of a gender stereotype. I'm sure you've heard the phrase that 'women belong in the kitchen' and that we should be cooking and cleaning and letting our husbands do all of the work. This is completely untrue, in fact, some women perform better at certain 'manly' jobs than men, and the reality is that everyone cooks and cleans, not just women.

5. Primary Group

Your primary group usually includes your family, closest friends, and the values that become a part of us. This group gives us our identity and is very close and important to us. The best representation of a primary group to me, would be my own primary group. My family is one of the most important, if not the most, to me. They have taught me most of my important values, beliefs, and I share lots emotions with.

6. Feminism

Feminism includes all of the positive ideals that women use to fight for equality so that they can choose to be whatever they wish without fear of discrimination or disbelief that they can actually achieve their dreams. My sister is a great example of feminism because she is putting forth so much effort to achieve her dream of becoming a lawyer, and she is fighting to prove that she can be the best lawyer regardless of her gender. She is currently attending UCI, and she will be transferring to a law school next year. She is a living example of all that the women before us have fought for, and women today continue to fight for.

7. Privilege

Privilege is a set of advantages that are given to a certain group because of their affiliation with it. These privileges can be based on race, gender, or economic. The image I selected represents privilege because my family and I are privileged to be Disneyland Annual pass holders, and we are able to make the trip to Southern California on lots of occasions. It is because my mom's job offers her enough money and the flexibility to travel. This is not something that everyone can do, so I am privileged to be able to do this.

8. Conformity

Conformity refers to the lengths that people go to in order to fit into a certain group. This can include changing your actions, wearing something specific, or even changing your beliefs. The image that I chose represents conformity because as a state officer for my youth group, we are required to wear our hair in a bun, wear long formals, and be kind and respectful to those in our youth group, not just in the state officer corps. For some people, these changes are something that are hard to adapt to, but they do them in order to fit in with the group.

The music video for the song Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys is a great example of feminism. The music video shows a woman who is constantly stopped and stared at, but no one can see all of the hard work and struggles that she deals with on a daily basis, she cares for her children and her mother, cleans the house, and she works hard on her computer, all by herself. These lyrics from the song sum it up pretty well, "Watch her as she's lighting up the night, but nobody knows that she's a lonely girl, and it's a lonely world." This shows the struggles of feminism perfectly, how we constantly put forth so much effort, but are constantly just seen as pretty faces.

Deeper Understanding Q.2: Who or what is it for? Why was it created? This music video is for every woman, as it shows the struggles that we all face in our lives. It was created to empower women, to show that we are not alone in our struggles and that we can be just as powerful and strong as any man.

Deeper Understanding Q.7: How does the meaning of this change depending on who is using or observing it? The meaning of this song and music video can change based on who is listening or watching the video. As a kid, I didn't notice the implications of feminism in it, I just thought it was about a pretty girl, but now as I have gotten older I can see the empowering spirit of the song. I think that another person who might look at the song differently might be a single mother. The music video and song can show the experience of a single mother, working hard to support herself and her family with no other help.

This scene from the show Pose depicts a woman coming over to a group of trans-women telling them to essentially leave the restaurant because they are bothering her and her friends, which Elektra then lashes out and shuts her down. This demonstrated the idea of gender, which is how we choose to identify, not the gender that we are assigned at birth. This is because it shows that Elektra is confident in her gender and that she is willing to speak against those who want to make her feel bad about it.

Deeper Understanding Q.4: Who benefits from this? The people who benefit from this scene are those who are trans or don't follow 'traditional' views on gender. This scene is empowering because it shows someone with a transphobic mindset being put in their place, and a strong trans-woman being the one to do it.
