[Understanding Anti-Americanism - it's nothing new]

*In the eighteenth century, America was a little understood place whose society was still under construction. At this time, criticism (mostly from British and French intellectuals) focused on the idea that it would be difficult or impossible to create any civilization there due to environmental conditions
*From around 1800s to about 1880, the idea that the United States was already demonstrably a failed society, ruined by democracy, equality, and other dangerous experiments was rampant. It's system was said to be so unworkable that no one elsewhere should view this new society as a model
*From the 1880s to the 1930s, America's growing size, power, and economic might showed that it could no longer be described as a failure. However, there was a growing fear abroad that the bad American model - populist democracy, mass culture, industrialization, and so on - might in the future take over the world and change the way of life of others in a dangerous and negative manner
*From the 1930s to 1945, the twentieth century's two main counter-ideologies - communism and fascism - dealt with the American challenge.
*From the end of WWII in 1945 to the end of the cold war in 1990, the fear of American domination was moved from the future to the present. The U.S. was supposedly in the process of taking over the world
*Since the end of the cold war, those who hold anti-Americanism views see the U.S. domination, both as a great power and as a terrible model for civilization to be established fact. That is why it is the most angry and widespread exemplification of anti-Americanism ever seen. Moreover, hatred was intensified by a new doctrine that claimed that America's higher level of development was at everyone else's expense, and, by the same token, the relative failure of others to duplicate this success was due to America's sins

- Hating America, 2004 by Barry & Judith Rubin

In the 1730's, a Frenchman named Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon - considered to be the greatest biologist and naturalist of his time - insisted that America's environment was so hostile that adaptation there was the opposite of growth: it was degeneration. America would remain backward because its environment was so hostile it made civilization there virtually impossible. Ignorant of such impressive American animals such as the buffalo and grizzly bear, Buffon claimed that the biggest American animals were "four, six, eight, and ten times" smaller than those of Europe or Africa. He described the people as "feeble and small in his organs of generation; he has neither body hair nor beard nor ardor for his female; although swifter than the European because he is better accustomed to running, he is, on the other hand, less strong in body; he is also less sensitive, and yet more timid and more cowardly; he has no vivacity, no activity of mind. Their heart is frozen, their society cold, their empire cruel."

This pessimistic belief was widely accepted throughout Europe. These prejudices drove Americans crazy - including Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. At a banquet at his home in February 1778, Franklin asked all the guests to stand against a wall in order to see who had really "degenerated." All of the eighteen Americans were taller than the eighteen Europeans there.

After the Revolution, Jefferson took Franklin's old job as the American ambassador to France, where he took on the incredible effort of combating anti-American ideas. In 1787, he had the remains of a New Hampshire moose shipped to France and had it displayed in the lobby of the hotel where he lived to show that American animals were big.

In response to the claims that Americans were less in both body and mind, one only has to recognize the distinguished Americans living at the time. George Washington and his military achievements, Franklin was a genius in physics, and David Rittenhouse was an astronomer and an artist.

- Hating America, 2004 by Barry & Judith Rubin

There has never been a world-wide phenomenon of anti-Britishism, anti-Frenchism, or anti-Russianism. A distinction has always been made between policy and state, state and society. Third World insurgents against British and French rule usually arose from among those who had most absorbed and accepted their ideas and cultures. The terrible French brutality in Indochina and Algeria is barely a memory in those countries, while Paris's continuing interventions in Africa to install new regimes and prop up dictators are not held to discredit it as a flawed state or society. Even Germany is forgiven for plunging the world into two wars and engaging in genocide. Meanwhile, though, the United States continues to be chastised for far more distant historic actions - its treatment of Native Americans, slavery, and ancient interventions in Latin America - which supposedly reveal its true imperialist and brutal essence. Why does America hold this distinction?

- Hating America, 2004 by Barry & Judith Rubin

Being born and raised as a United States citizen I definitely understand as well as appreciate the benefits. Never having the luxury or opportunity to explore different countries it wouldn't be in my best interest to downgrade or speak negative about other nations. As we read about learning more about America's history and the evolution since from the beginning it helps to understand that this country was founded on Power, and evolution. Which helps me to understand why other countries are envious and jealous of The USA. Also respecting the power in which our nation holds from how we have won wars, accompanied allies during the time of need and even stepping in to mediate certain issues on numerous occasions that had nothing to do with us. Over time The US has become extremely dominate through Trial an error but like most countries you can't fault us for our short comings "No Nation is Perfect" But the Morals and Constitution this country was founded on have been a long standing foundation that birthed this great Nation. America is the only nation where every immigrant and minority make plans to visit in their lifetime in search of pursuing the "American Dream". The fact that America is one of the few countries if any that a person or immigrant from another country can actually become a citizen. The world definitely has a different view of the United States from the outside looking in, so of course they have every right speak negative about the US when in all actuality that really knew nothing about it. They have to see actually see it to believe it. Even though our country have been through some tough times those Eras where not everlasting. We have been through Slavery, The Great Depression, World Wars, and from my understanding situations such as those have made this country what it is today. So I definitely don't agree with tactics of other nations in regard to the negativity toward the US but if you where in their position what would you do?

As a white female, born and raised in the United States, I have learned how lucky I truly am. I keep bringing up the fact that my husband has served in places that are not as fortunate as the United States. The pictures and stories he has told has opened my eyes more, though I have always been very thankful and understanding of the great country I live in. I think that America is always seen for its "faults" or wrong doings because there has been a huge label stuck on our country forever. The land of the free, the American Dream, the land of opportunity and so much more. I think that other countries get mixed feelings about it, and possibly hold onto it to not make themselves feel so bad for their wrong doings or faults. At the same time I have only been on one side looking out. I understand that America has long way to go and still has things that need to fixed. There are countries that may be more "free" than ours, or do things in a way that works for their country and I think that is awesome. But when comparing to countries that aren't as privileged it is hard for me to focus on the negatives of our country, as well as other great countries. Overall, I feel that America is held to a high standard and that is why there is a distinction.

I believe America is a wonderful country, but certainly not perfect, which is would be impossible.
What separates America from other countries is the many ideologies it holds about what kind of Nation it is and strives to be: All men are created equal, equal justice for all, and Democracy itself. All these coupled together with the amount that America promotes equality as its value, I believe could be a large factor in other countries criticizing us harshly. After all, if you are at a competition, and one contestant was talking about how amazing they are at whatever the contest may be, you would likely scrutinize that contestant more closely.
We may come across as hypocrites to other countries, or perhaps we seem foolish for spending so much energy on these mantras about our ideals instead of trying to make sure these values are implemented as best they possibly can into our country.
If these are the causes, I can't say they are completely unreasonable, but the one thing they might be missing is the fact that these ideas and statements give many Americans, and even those from other countries, hope. And inspire them to do great things.

America: The land of the free. That says a lot about our country in one statement. Sure, other countries had their doubts while we were rising, but we could say horrible things about other countries now and when they were rising too. Good things didn't happen in our past and same with other countries. I don't think we are at the best at everything, but we are continuing to do better. I don't think living in other countries would be bad either thought. If we want change, we shall receive. America is democracy. That's an important piece to our success as a country. People came here to settle because they could purse their dreams. Even though I think it's more of a struggle now then 50 years ago, the American dream is still alive. People are literally dying to be an American citizen or at least have their children born here so they can have a good life. And it makes me sad when people complain about how bad their life is here when others are dying to get here to give their kids and families a safe and happy life. I don't agree with other nations negative points of views. We have a beautiful country, rights, and equality for everyone here. It's a no brainier why America IS great.

America is great. And like most great things, it has had to establish a foundation based off trial and error. Our flawed history has made us a stronger nation and we continue to learn from our past mistakes and grow from it. The United States might have an imperfect system, but it is a system that we continue to tweak and shift based off what the people of America want/ need. The President/ government might be the head of this country, but we the people, are the neck that turns it.....not many countries can claim the same. I think other countries find us to be a threat, so they paint us out to be a bad place. They don't want their people to move here because it could effect their economy and culture. Also, The United States is "the new kid on the block" and our history and culture do not go as far back as other countries, so perhaps we are looked down upon because our history might be as rich...but not as ancient. The United States is a hodgepodge of cultures, religions, ethnicities, and beliefs. This is what makes us so coveted by other countries...but in the same way, maybe not as respected.

As a daughter of immigrants and a girl that has done a lot of traveling, in my opinion and from what i have observed I would say that the United States has been held to the standard of everything negative United States citizens are known as snobby and entitled. Starting with the term "America" in every other country that I have been in it is known as the states, or the United States. People referring to this country as America discredit the many other countries that are a part of America. America is made up of North America, Central America, and South America and by believing that this country and its citizens alone makeup America is a great example of the entitlement of this country. The second reason I would give is that there are many people who believe that this country is the best in every aspect, which is simply not true. Reading through the CIA statistics of the world last semester I learned that we actually fall behind in a lot of important aspects. The last reason I would say is although the horrible things happened in the past, most of the major systems in this is country are still design to make people of color suffer the most, especially the prison system.

America holds this distinction because we are always in the global spotlight being picked and prodded about everything we do, and most of the time people only focus on Americas mistakes instead of our successes. Every decision our country makes is being criticized all over the world with numerous positive or negative opinions and people are always quick to hop on the bandwagon. Peoples’ specific set of views stem from their parents, friends, and biased left and right news outlets which in turn always gives us a wide spectrum of opinions when an issue arises. The problem now a days is people are being very easily manipulated due to technology and now growing up to either love or hate America

This country was a nation built by immigrants and was established here due to the imperialism of, Spain, France, England, etc. and has evolved into the country that is today. For all of history land has been considered power, and we have seen throughout history the countries that have taken massive risks to obtain this power and what they will do to keep it. From the first time our ancestors stepped onto this world to the last, there will be mistakes, it is a part of life. Nothing has or will ever be perfect and mistakes is how we evolve. Mistakes are a major steppingstone to not only how we as a nation but ourselves become successful. Even though our country is put in the spotlight for most of its errors, I believe that we always try to have good intentions and try to do things for a greater good.

We broke away from England, we wrote a Constitution like none other seen before that time. America has done a lot of great things in it’s history. This means that America is constantly being watched. In History we were watched and judged because we were so new. Newer things always get more attention then those that are old.

I believe the united states holds this distinction because the U.S is a world wide leader. The U.S has been a leading power in every aspect of trade, technology, and diplomacy. Many world leaders look at the U.S and label its citizens as lazy and entitled. I believe this occurs because most of the U.S is not aware of what is happening around the world. In many countries there are massive suffering that includes starvation, corruption, and violence. Citizens of the U.S do believe these aspects of life do happen but they also believe that it is being handled. The U.S holds this distinction because it is under a microscope constantly and criticized on every decision they make. The U.S was built on a notion that it is a "American Dream" and it truly is because people from all over the world want to make their dreams come true in the the U.S. I also believe the U.S hold this distinction because of our history. We have a wide range of good and bad history that the rest of the world cant seem to move on from. I believe the question is. We accept all walks of life. Why cant the rest of the world accept U.S citizens?

I imagine if we sent people from across the world to start a brand new community on the moon we would all watch in complete wonder and criticism. I'm sure we would experience feelings of excitement and curiosity as we watched their successes and failures.
In places of the world where thousands of years of tradition, culture and religion sets the tone of expectation, rebelliousness or even difference of opinion may ruffle feathers.
America was just that. Feather Rufflers. Tradition breakers, spiritual rebels and freedom seekers. A clean slate. In the simplest of terms I believe America is often hated for its Feather Rufflers.
For example, we often hate something personally because we do not understand it. I have very negative feelings toward many religious practices. I often find myself surprised by the anger I feel when discussing things like Polygamy. If I allow anger to drive that train I will find more and more reasons to hate. However as I have put my own view on the shelf and taken steps back to listen and learn I have found a deeper tolerance and understanding. While I do not agree with the lifestyle I am able to accept it as a part of Society without judgment.

I believe that the Anti-Americanism settlement today comes to the fact that it is the world superpower that it is meant to set the example of democracy, freedom, and equality. It was built on a foundation that many countries used as an example of a democratic republic society and due to that, it is thrust more into the limelight than other countries. Every decision that America makes affects the world on an international scale. As the world has become a more global economy and the United States influence on the world scale and continued to increase, it becomes almost necessary to point out the flaws in America to keep it in check. An example of the United States economy affecting the global economy is the 2008 financial crash. When the market plummeted in 2008 it didn’t just affect the U.S. it affects most of the world because it affected the global economy other countries often critique the U.S. as they know that whatever choice the United States makes will affect them. The United States also functions as the world's police force. When the United States sees some sort of action a country or extremist group is performing that the United States considers wicked they will step in to try to correct the wrongdoing they are committing. Some examples of this within the last century include the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the War on Terror and even some of the current military units in Africa to combat terrorist organizations there. Due to the overreach of the American military and bases in various countries, examples of countries with significant military bases are Germany, South Korea, Japan, and Cuba. Numerous countries often consider the overreach to be imperialistic as the U.S. military are spread across the world. These are just some of the reasons that an “Anti-American” sentiment has formed.

Anti-Americanism "Why does America continue to be chastised for far and distant historic actions." First, I don't think that it is far and distant. I think that the United States holds the distinction because the United States claims to be the greatest nation in the world, the land of the free where dreams come true. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery except as punishment so then slavery only evolved. Laws were made so that colored people would be imprisoned and still used as slaves. I think the same holds true for Native Americans, their lands were taken and they are still suffering the repercussion of it. One of the things that I see when reading online comments from people outside of this country, is our lack of good health care. Other countries have universal health care so then why are people dying without good health care in the “greatest nation” of the world.

"In the eighteenth century, America was a little understood place whose society was still under construction." This quote by itself, explains why the United States holds this distinction. Our country is a world wide leader in many things but that didn't come easy. Our country has participated in wars, had slavery and obviously was never perfect. This was all part of where we are now. Many countries tend to look at the historic flaws that we have but every country had to go through something to get to where they are now. I believe that these terrible things that happened in our past can be looked as lessons to further improve and better our country. Due to our country participating in wars, we have one of the strongest militaries in the entire world. Although our country has never been perfect, or will never be, it is definitely a positive leap than from where we were before.

I believe that America is looked at under such an intense microscope because we have emerged as a leader in the world, and an example. So any negative time in our history, or our present, is scrutinized and put on display for the rest of the developed world in a much more aggressive manor. Every country has blood on it's hands, the true test of a nation is how well it has learned and grown from the past transgressions. I can understand that there are still residual signs of stress and turmoil in our country today. There is still racism, class warfare, and multitudes of discrimination whether it be gender or sexual preference etc. But when you compare America to other parts of the world we have a lot of freedoms and liberties that are not guaranteed to citizens in other places. The United States has a lot of pressure on it to not only lead, but to to teach. As others look to us and sift through our history, I hope they can find a clear path forward, and see our growth as a nation.

America is not only a leader but a wonderful country. Being on top will bring not only admiration but also great criticism. This country has its great moments and has learned from its bad ones. Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try, and I feel like thats what we have been doing. We have learned, like some of my peers have said by trial and error. All the "errors" we have made have taught us something and we continue to learn and fix our mistakes. Every other country has its flaws but they continue to grow, I feel like they don't want America to continue to grow, I don't mean in numbers but as a country in itself. All the great things America has done have been overshadowed by its faults, and I believe its because we are seen as a threat. Freedom is a huge example set by America, others may feel intimidated by all the other things that we have accomplished. Overall I believe we will continue to grow and become a better and more intelligent country.

America holds many distinct titles and there is always some battle for us to compete to be best in everything we do. I believe we as Americans, are so proud that we hold ourselves to a standard that we don't feel other countries meet. Possibly one reason anti-Americanism exists is that we won't allow for any criticism and literally fight wars to prove one thing or another. I find that the those who take it personally when our shortcomings are pointed out are often the first to criticize others while also denying that we have faults.
A perfect example, was the part of "Hating America" where it said, "America's distant historic actions" such as slavery, treatment of Native Americans and "ancient" Latin American interventions were somehow not as bad in comparison to Germany's genocide and wars because it was longer ago. Not only does it seem the author is justifying our actions, they also fail to realize and admit that we STILL treat Native Americans, African Americans and Latino Americans as less than. While I agree that we have come a long way, I believe we still have a long way to go. Admitting our faults and actively trying to work toward being better should be the focus, not what other countries feel about us.

I truly believe that America is a fantastic nation and I count myself luck to be a citizen. However, the United States does come under a lot of scrutiny for its handling of historical events and foreign affairs. With this high degree of scrutiny, there comes an anti-American sentiment. There are several reasons that I believe that the United States experiences this where other countries may not. The first and foremost in my mind is that we claim to live in The Land of The Free, which I believe is true to an extent, however we have historical been anti-freedom in some of our foreign affairs. Examples of this can be found all throughout our involvement in Southern America during the Cold War. The united States, on several occasions and in multiple nations, would topple Democratically Elected leaders in the name of "Democracy" where in reality it was to protect american economic assets. Atrocities such as this are not unique to America and I do not believe that they are inherently the reason for anti-american sentiment. I do believe however that the issue is that these atrocities have never been fully addressed. Another example is that of racial inequality in America. We act like institutional racism is part of America's distant past where in reality, it was only in 1964 that the 24th Amendment was passed, eliminating the poll taxes that were in place to indirectly prevent African Americans from voting. We act like we are making the world a better place, and in some ways we have, but I think that we have largely failed to recognize and appropriately address our downfalls. This leads to what I perceive to be the other cause of anti-American sentiment; we ourselves fail to recognize the gravity of the some of the negative actions this country has taken and this leads to (in my opinion) an over-inflated view of ourselves. Germany was given as an example in the prompt as a country that has committed atrocities but does not receive the disdain that the US does and I believe it is because the nation has fully recognized the extent of their atrocities, whereas we in the US often fail to recognize the extent of our own. I say all of this believing that the US is not evil, we are not an evil people, but we have done evil things and often faced little or no consequences. Much of the criticism surrounding the US is over dramatic, but I think it is disingenuous to say that all of it is.

I believe America holds this distinction for two main reasons. The first being that it is the youngest of the developed nations. When we first became a nation and everyone expected us to fail so they were quick to point out or try to come up with examples of us failing, to prove their point. Then when we not only didn't fail but began to thrive then I believe that was threatening to some countries and they didn't want us to be successful. Then once we established ourselves as a powerhouse and introduced new policies and ways of life, becoming a world example and leader. Then we start to be held to a high standard in every other category as well. I believe the best are usually critiqued the most harshly.

Like many of my peers believe, I too believe the United States of America is set to the supreme standard of countries. We are like “the golden child”, often held in high esteem by others, and for whom there are high hopes. But I think the reason why we Americans find it hard to move past our history is because the United States is such a new nation built from a couple of hundreds of years of migrating immigrants and maybe as a nation we find it hard to move past the history of our American ancestors. The United States seems to be under a figurative microscope, magnifying every wrongdoing it has done to its citizens. But I believe Perhaps one of the reasons why many of the mentioned countries, such as Germany and France, are less scrutinized is because they have as the newer generation have acknowledged these criminal events but more importantly, taken responsibility for what their own ancestors had done. When a nation holds itself out to the rest of the world as a city on a hill, a beacon of freedom and justice, then it is reasonable to hold that nation to the highest standards.

Throughout history, the views of America have changed drastically. It is easy to forget the horrors and acts of selfishness that Americans have committed over time. Many americans find it easy to forget how we got here, what others had to go through in order for us to achieve what we have, and how other countries feel about us. In general, Americans are very much sheltered from the outside world, we do not have to face a lot of the problems that many other countries have, yet we do have our own problems here at home as well. While it is easy to forget these things throughout your life, Americans don't go around bragging how we pillaged, murdered, and destroyed many of the settlements that were here before us, instead we were tought the opposite in school. We were taught how great Cristopher Columbus was, how heroic he was to sail here and how he "discovered" America. I believe it is things like this that is the reason other parts of the world frown upon us. The tunnel vision of Americans, though it has gotten better recently, has had a negative impact on our country. We forget that we also got to where we are, not by the great things that we have done, but the bad things that we have done as well. It is as if we view most of our issues with only one side, ours. We tend to not view how our decisions impact other countries around the world, and other cultures. Being a great leader sometimes means that you have to let others win as well. It is not always a good idea to be the "best" at everything, especially when you claim that you are, but realistically, you are not.
