Today we started off by looking at unit 9 (making a 3-4 minuet horror film/clip), and writing goals for each section of unit 9 e.g. I said I need to improve my research techniques. We then did a self assessment on our skills, and then moved onto starting our research into looking at horror within different types of media/genres e.g. Clothes, films, games, events such as Thorpe park fright night. In the afternoon we then watched an hour of an documentary called "A history of horror - Frankenstein goes to Hollywood" - This was interesting since it spoke about events that went on around that time and the trouble some had in the great depression to make horror films, and how they are still successful as of today, as well as looking at the techniques they used at the time. E.g. Practising make-up on a dummy head to explore different techniques. I Tomorrow I will finish off the research I started this morning.

Today we started by looking at what codes and conventions that are used in horror films, for this Leila showed us some clips from horror films to show what she meant and how they worked. After this I did a worksheet, showing examples of different codes and conventions and explained the effect it had on the audience, for example cutting of a phone line might cause the audience to become anxious since the main character is now all alone and cannot get help from outside sources. I learnt the different techniques that are used in horror films and how much they are used so I can be careful to not make it so similar to others I've seen and weather to follow the rules or not I will be using this for my research later on. Tomorrow we will be doing a practical lesson and watching the movie IT (2017) for research.

Today we had a workshop with Dave on lighting in horror, we watched clips from movies, and had examples of horror techniques such as under exposure we also learnt to think about where light sources are coming from e.g. a lamp, the window etc, we then went on to film our own scenes involving lighting and how it can be used, we had to show the different types of lighting. I learnt that lighting is more important to horror films than you think, for example if you only see a section of the monster for example because the other section is hidden it makes the viewer wonder what is going on and makes them curious to what it is. Today we are also going to see the movie IT (2017) in the cinema for research my review on the film will be on my work folder/showbie folder. Tuesday we will be working on Foley, and I will bring something in to create some horror sound effects.

Today we started by reviewing today's tasks and then wrote a review on the movie we saw on Friday (IT) After this we looked at a few Foley videos and how Foley can be used in horror for example I learnt that at certain frequencies people can feel uncomfortable even hearing that noise, also that only animals can hear certain noises and frequencies. After this we went off into the groups from last week and got onto the task and we made some of our own Foley, some of it didn't work well since the room was echo-like and we also had a creaky floor which didn't help, we tried different materials to mimic a heart beat e.g. a cloth but that was too thick so we used someones clothing instead which was thinner resulting in a better sound. We used objects such as a lamp shade, a rotary phone, etc. Overall we did quite well although I feel like next time I would use a better room without an echo, and make sure everyone is quiet when we are recording since that ruined a lot of recordings.Today I learnt that with foley we need to ensure we have a small room to record in to ensure there is no echo in the background. Tomorrow we will be possibly editing in the Foley we shot today into the demonstration videos we did for lighting on Thursday.

Today we started by looking at horror clips and how music and audio is used to create a atmosphere within horror movies e.g. Jaws, without music wouldn't be as tense, and when the music in Jaws becomes less tense you think it is safe to go back into the sea away from the shark but the music tricks you into thinking that way. We then looked up music/soundtrack from a horror movie/game/music etc. and I learnt that music in horror games is important even if it is more ambient it can be used to set a scene and can effect how viewers see the game/movie. After this we did some experiments on garage band this taught me that you can use the auto-player to create good pieces of music even if you don't know how to play an instrument this will be useful for when we make our horror movies in the group project.

Today we worked on prostethics, we did a burn, and a cut arm, I worked with someone I didn’t usually but it worked out well, it was my turn first and I did the burn, I think I did really well but I could’ve blended it more to the arm colour, overall I think what went well was the use of tissue and the ease I’d using the liquid latex since I haven’t used it before it was easy to apply however next time I need to use more initiative and spread a more thick layer on to make it easier to build. Next time I would use more colours and make sure to use more tissue to make it look better, my partner did well and we worked well to make “realistic” wounds. After this we made a prosthetic eye ball, with plastic pellets we put them in hot water and then shaped them, into an eye ball shape, me and Chloe did well but we didn’t get the hang of it and it appeared to be very fiddly which we got a bit frustrated about next time I would make more of a effort and use tools such as tweasers to make it easier to make. If I had to make it again.

Feedback I got from others -
1. Looks good but shouldn't have such severe burnt bits at points and needs to be faded into skin tone more.
2. Quote "Bloody brilliant" - Less black and more red in the middle of the burns.

Today my diary logs were peer assessed by a classmate - Jayne, I need to improve in my detail that I put in my diary logs and add more information. We then moved onto looking at a re-cap of semiotics and defined what it was and gave examples of this. We also looked into the age ratings given by the BBFC this will help me when thinking of ideas for our project since I need to keep in mind what is appropriate and what isn't in 15 age rated films. We then got into groups and made a presentation about the year of horror films we got given, 1960s and researched The Birds, we created a padlet and worked on this together looking at semiotics and audiences within the film e.g. the birds and the children singing innocence clash together to make an eerie scene. Below is a link to that padlet, today I learned a re-cap on semiotics and it made me think more about my audience and what I want them to see in my short horror film. Some of the semiotics we looked at was "loss of belief", "music" and "role-assuming" these helped us

Today we watched videos about narrative we looked at how music is used and how speech is used, or not used to make a scene more entertaining or effective. We were meant to do script writing but instead I started expanding my final idea and planning what to do for the pitch, I made a list of things I needed to do and then went onto create a survey monkey to get some feedback for audience market research. Today I learnt that narrative is important to make the film/video flow whether its silence to make it eerie or talking to distract you from the main picture. This is useful for me since it made me think about where and how to use narrative and when I plan out my initial idea I will add in sound effects, and sound bites to look into in order to have an idea of the atmosphere I will want to create.

Today we started by looking at Foley and watched clips and got given tips on how to use and edit sound effects for example today I learnt you can use an effect on premier pro that changes the pitch or can make a soundtrack more echo like so if you need it to sound more like you're in a church you can change the pitches and sounds to make it more realistic even if you mess up the recoding or can't record in that area. We also learnt how to record correctly ie. Make sure both camera and sound are working correctly and say the slate - Scene - Action to make sure your recordings are ready for the editor. We then moved onto the man activity and chose a clip we wanted to edit foley on top of and re-create it - We chose a scene from women in black - Some scenes were very hard to re-create and had to get a sound bite from Freesounds.org for the music box section due to the fact we didn't have a music box available. With this task it was easy since we did this before - Next time I would try and go to different rooms to see what other things are available to make those sound bites that we need for a clip or research how you can make those certain sounds. We also reviewed a short film based on the sound/foley I will include a image of this below. The short film was called "Text" . We also started looking into promotional market research which is a pdf file on my work padlet. The short film text made me think about how foley is important and can make a scene more intense and make you feel like you're actually there I will use foley in my film due to this, to enhance sounds and ensure it is clear and not quiet, since in a film background noise may be heard if we needed a sound e.g. dropping a bag to be louder - Therefore foley is the better option to use due to its effectiveness and use in horror.

Today I added some more things to my pitch power point I added Psychographics and demographics to my power point I also made it easier to read by making fonts bigger my practice pitch was 2 mins 13 seconds - I think if I spoke slower and added a bit more detail in my notes it should be fine - I am ready for my pitch tomorrow. This helped me really think about what I need to say in my pitch and what I can leave out, it made me more ready and confident for my pitch tomorrow. This made me also think about how my idea is portrayed and I made some changes due to this e.g. The font style to make it easier for everyone to read.

Today we did our pitches I think my pitch went well because I was able to clearly get my idea across - However I felt as if my voice wavered in the beginning due to nerves I did ask some classmates how I did, I apparently did well apart from stopping and sighing at one point (This was due to me being out of breath by talking). I forgot to mention demographics and psycho-graphics due to me being so nervous next time I'll ensure they're written on my notes in bold so I remember important things. Tomorrow we will find out who won the pitches and what groups we are in/Job roles. Today I learnt that I should practice my pitch on my own at home so I can ensure that I cover everything that I want to cover I feel like my scores will be much better if I kept to these tips.

Today we got placed into our groups my group consists of:

Rebecca - Director
Me - Producer
Callum - Props/Prosthetics/sound
Kirsten - PR
Josh - Editor
Michael - Camera Operator

I feel as if this group is good so far, we started by calling a minuets of meeting, we went over what the idea was any small things about the idea e.g. Where it would be filmed. I typed up the minuets of meeting just after but I took notes as we spoke to ensure I wouldn't forget anything. I then deligated tasks to everyone, as a result of this we have finished the script, started a rough storyboard, a rough shotlist, Ideas for mean texts, Production schedule/contingency plan, We did a facebook annoucement for actors, Foley and prop list, came up with a teamname and name for the production.

Since I am the producer I am happy to be in this role since I haven't done it before, I feel like I'm doing well and organising people well , I made a padlet for the group myself, and put all the tasks needed to be done under that persons name, so there's no confusion, and its easy to see who did what when it comes to marking pre-production. Next week we will be looking at actors getting the paperwork done and signed e.g. the location release forum signed by Rebecca's parents since its their house. I feel like the team is working well together and so far so good. I learnt today that to be a good producer I need to plan at home what I'm doing that day so I can be sure of what I'm doing with my team, I also need to be more sure of my actions In order to be a good producer this is what I learnt today due to me being sometimes unsure on what to do next when giving out tasks.

Image: The Padlet I made with the categories.

Today I assisted with Foley practices, for example we dragged my bag across the floor to see if it made a good dragging a body across the floor sound. I updated the budget list and made changes to the production schedule so it was kept updated, I checked in with people throughout the day to ensure all tasks were being done. I typed up a minuets of meeting once I was home and uploaded it onto padlet. Today I learnt that I need to make sure my group knows how to use the equipment which is why I will ensure we do practice runs for example our sound operator forgot how to use the Tascam so they needed to be refreshed I will make sure we go over these things before we film so no one gets confused and there is no hassle on the day for anyone, and to ensure filming goes smoothly.

Video is of a part from minuets of meeting that we had today

We started off with a team meeting since I needed to see how they did with the tasks I gave yesterday. Everyone has completed these tasks, and we have completed the majority of the paperwork, due to this I said about making some contact details to give to our auditions so if they agree to be in our video they can contact us if they cannot do it, are ill etc. We also came up with some questions to ask them, for example if they had any allergy's or if they minded having prosthetic on their faces, also when they're available and for how long - E.g. how many hours and if they need transport or can get there on their own, also we take their contact details such as mobile and email to get ahold of them the day before to confirm filming times and time to arrive etc. I learnt that being organised before we audition actors is a good thing so they can be sure of us and ensure they know all the necessary information, I also learnt to take two sets of contact details to ensure like other students last year actors are aware of events, and things happening within the production they are acting in this is due to avoiding confusion with dates - Location etc. and to keep the project moving steadily.

Today was mainly getting smaller bits of paperwork done such as the shot list and making sure everything is uploaded in time for the deadline, we sat around for a while since we have finished all paperwork as of now, and we waited until 3:30pm to go to actor auditions we got their contact details and before they auditioned I asked them the questions, and our director gave them the contact detail slips, and provided scripts to people to take home with them. I will email them on Thursday to ensure we have all their phone numbers since a few didn't know their phone numbers but we have their emails so we are free to contact them. There was the issue of them not knowing their timetable until after half term, but they said they will contact us, and we will contact them during half term to see when they are available for filming. We also prepared for our pitch today we wrote our individual pieces and I put them into a power point together with any pictures my team members wanted on their section this can be found on the group pre-production padlet Today I learnt that when auditioning actors remember to specify if we want boys/girls etc. due to the fact we didn't need boys to audition we needed girls I thought we made this clear but some did turn however another group needed male actors so they happily took them while we auditioned our girls.

Today we got in touch with our actors and found out they're available this Thursday and a few other Thursdays therefore we are ready to film, and have contact with them via text messaging to ensure we are all approved and ready, Michael got the equipment sheet done and signed by Dave now we have dates, now all there is to do is make sure our sheets are all filled out - After checking they are. Today I learnt that having those two lines of communication is important, however in out group it should be only one person communicating with them since it gets confusing, I wasn't told that we had a meeting arranged - So when I went and arranged one myself there was already one set which made me look a bit off task - Next time I will keep in more contact with my group it was the holidays therefore it was tricky to get into contact with all members e.g. They are on holiday. Next time I will make note of those who I cannot get ahold of and ensure they know whats going on once they are back and able to talk.

Today was us being marked on our units therefore we did this instead since most other paperwork is ready for filming some of us in the group are completing or improving work for me I had to improve my diary logs since some of them wern't as detailed as they could've been. Today I learnt to look at the questions the teacher puts as examples of what to answer on padlet diarys, to help me if I get stuck.

Today we started by having a meeting having been updated that one of our actors cannot commit to the production we have asked for a stand in, using one of our other actors, we will get this confirmed by filming date. However if this doesnt go well our director has offered herself to one of the roles just in case as a contingency plan. We decided to start doing our directors cut for this I made the questions with Michael and Kirsten, we set up a small room in which to ask them questions - This was only a practice run for when we do our real directors cuts. Next time we will use proper film equipment e.g. DSLR and Boom mic in order to ensure audio and picture quality is well done. After we did this I helped our editor since he was busy with another task by getting feedback on his text experimental video, I got four peoples feedback, it really helped us see what people liked and disliked in a title sequence and hopefully helped our editor out as well. Today I learnt that I need to stay calm when sitations such as late filming occor since it cannot always be controlled. We decided to have one long day of filming instead of two days since the actors, and time we have left aren't the best therfore next time we would try and find other means for actors instead of asking drama.

Today we didn't have much to do in the way of production work - Therefore I started on unit 11 I did a future goals powerpoint which had my strengths and weaknesses also short and long term goals, we then moved onto doing our SWOT analysis for our short and long terms goals that we set, I them moved onto doing re-drafts of my personal statement I made it for an apprenticeship instead of a university application, I got feedback from the teacher and they said I needed to make it more formal due to the way they're usually laid out so I sifted though it and got rid of anything too informal or a bit cheesy etc. Today I learnt that finding strengths and weaknesses is hard but its good to ask other people who you've worked with what your strengths or weaknesses are since it makes it easier. I also learnt that personal statements need to be more formal and I will remember this for next time or when I make another draft for when I hunt for apprenticeships.

Today we filmed scenes 1 to first part of scene 3. Today went really well we started by booking the equipment out which went well however we forgot a clapper board so we ended up using a bit of paper and me writing it down. We couldn't use the Jib due to a missing part (The camera plate) so we just used the normal tripod. Getting to Rebecca's was easy since we all met up apart from Callum who could drive, we set up the equipment and filmed, it went well as we got on with the filming and will continue with the filming on Tuesday next week. Our actor today messaged us and said they couldn't film due to an emergency so Kirsten and our director stood in as actors. With filming everyone did their roles and overall it was a good session. I learnt that we should tick off equipment when we book it to ensure we have everything. Next time we will ensure we have it all.

Today we finished filming however we had a lot of trouble with the equipment booking since we needed to update the equipment list, when we got that done we realised we didn't have the Tascam footage from last filming date so far we checked Tascam 1&2 so tomorrow we will check the others for the sound footage. There were disagreements in the group which delayed things so next time we need to make sure there aren't any disputes before we leave etc. today went well overall I learnt that group disputes should be solved before filming tomorrow we will start editing.

Today we got to work with editing, Josh went and edited with our director, however I did some mentoring so I kept in touch by asking them how it was going etc. I then continued with unit 11 since I didn't have too much to do, and then I reviewed what went on in the day. Today I learnt that I should ensure all my team know where we are at in terms of post-production. Also tomorrow we will continue with editing and will start doing foley.

Today, we started off by me and Josh checking the Tascams for the missing tascam footage from day 1 of filming, the ones we needed weren't available so Josh went to edit with Rebecca and Michael, while me and Callum started by doing the list of foley, we found out there is an effect called "High pass" in the audio effects which can get the muffled music for the scene in which veronica is listening to music. When we did the foley I uploaded it all and named it all for Josh so he has more time to edit. I also then found our missing day 1 sound footage, and I named, deleted it all so it was easily identifyible. One issue I had was Callum started recording just after the clap and action so the scene, take, and roll wasn't heard in some sound bits which may make it an issue for Josh to edit quickly. Today went well, I did all this and then started my evaluation for this unit.

Today I came in and did my evaluation we went over what we wanted to do for feedback - We chose to do a mini screening, the big screening, a survey monkey and a small questionnaire. This will help to ensure good feedback and help us really know what our
audiences think of our film, I learnt today that planning an evaluation is useful in order to make It easier to know what to type and how to hit all the points we need to.

Today I created a survey monkey and came up with questions to ask our mini screening - As well as me and Kirsten went to classes to get feedback on PR materials, we got some good feedback overall and learnt that teaser trailers need to be longer, and more gore is also a way to go, people really liked the initiations to screenings and the blood designs on them most said they don't need to be improved at all. We asked 3 girls 3 boys which was a good sample for a small group of people.
