Lecturing is a method for passing information from the presenter to the receiver. The word Lecture is an old-fashioned term, came into use around the middle ages and has the meaning “to read or to deliver formal discourses”. Lecturing can be instructed in different models through different learning styles (visual, aural, verbal, physical, logical and social). Nevertheless, not one learning style is better than the other, they are just different depending on the person presenting the lecture, the type of information, and the person receiving the information.

What conditions should a good lecture meet? Tips & tricks

Keeping lectures shorter rather than longer will improve what students remember.

Use handouts to lessen the burden of taking notes for students which then don’t have to divide their attention of copying what’s being said and understanding what’s being said.

Make lectures fun, interactive and inspiring

Be prepared to be flexible as a teacher and step into roles such as facilitator just as much.

Encourage students to ask questions and give feedback in a more interactive and interesting way, e.g. via different apps.

Keep the content clarified by using gestures, simple devices, by changing voice, change in position and facial expressions.

Use Bloom’s taxonomy to structure a list of objectives for a lecture and survey the students to see what they want to get out of a lecture.

Keep eye contact. When making eye contact, actually it’s good to look at specific individuals while making a point. Individuals seem most comfortable with about five seconds of sustained eye contact.

Conduct midterm teaching evaluations or simply ask the students for suggestions and comments at the midpoint of the quarter.

Prepare backups in case of technological difficulties.

Summarise every lecture at the end in a clear and simple way

Recording the lecture and spread it in a audio format

Tape yourself, during lectures for self evaluation

Use physical objects like stress ball and toys to increase involvement and make icebreakers easier.

Forming a social friendly classes and get involved in discussion

Lecturing is a dynamic word depending on various variables. There is no one way better than the other, they are just different and at the end they should serve the same purpose which is “delivering knowledge”. To meet a good lecture condition, the lecture should be created in the most effective and meaningful way possible. This can be achieved by considering flexibility, goal setting, build in assessments. Besides, once the presenter knows the applied knowledge and the target group, they can adjust the learning style, apply the needed tools and tips above. This can make the difference between a moderate study session and a great/effective one.

Achievable goals are facilitating means of working, material providing and starting a subject by creating inspiration for a topic. Lectures can clarify questions students get while studying on their own or in groups. Lectures themselves do not necessarily achieve learning for students, but might be seen more as guiding them in the right direction and providing them with variable tasks that will enable them to actually learn at their own pace.
