The adults are all depicted expressionless to sad, which shows that the mood in the train is very defeated and somber. However, for the children, they are still shown to be excited. The contrast between his fathers sad expression and the sparkles of excitement George gets asking about where their going really shows the difference in attitudes between the children and adults. The sound effects of coughing and crying create a mood of chaos and disorder, which is what the characters are feeling to a certain extent. The facial expressions on most of the adults are that of some kind of distress, despair, or sadness. The children's facial expressions however are joyful and grinning. For example, the children seemed happy and excited because the train is a new fun experience for them, however when the illustrations focus on the train itself it is portrayed as being a harsh environment. Another way this is shown is when the illustrations are of the parents or adults, they seem stressed and are looking at the situation in a completely different way than the children.
