The appendix is a small, tube-shaped organ that connects to the cecum, which is the first part of the large intestine. It is found on the lower right side of the abdomen. While we don't fully understand its function, it is believed that the appendix helps the immune system, especially in babies, by fighting infections and keeping the balance of bacteria in the intestine.

These are the most common symptoms in patients with appendicitis:

ABDOMINAL PAIN: At first, it might start near the belly button and then move to the lower right side of the abdomen. The pain usually gets stronger and sharper over time.

NAUSEA AND VOMITING: These usually happen after the abdominal pain starts.

LOW FEVER: Usually, there is a mild fever, which might get higher if the infection gets worse.

DIFFICULTY WALKING OR REDUCED MOBILITY: The pain might make it hard to move, and the person may walk bent over.

Appendicitis can't be treated with medicine. The only way to cure it is through surgery called an appendectomy, which means removing the appendix.

Appendectomy is a surgery to remove the inflamed appendix, usually done to treat appendicitis. There are two main types: open appendectomy, which needs a bigger cut in the abdomen, and laparoscopic appendectomy, which uses small cuts and a camera to guide the surgery. Recovery from laparoscopic appendectomy is usually quicker, with less pain and a shorter hospital stay.

POSTOPERATIVE CARE

Pain Control

Incision Care

Physical Activity

Diet

Medical Control

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH APPENDICITIS

In my adolescence, I suffered from appendicitis. I was 14 years old when I was diagnosed with “peritonitis”, which means a very serious appendicitis. before all this, obviously I had several of the symptoms that I have mentioned in this post. Pain in the lower right part of the stomach, fever, body discomfort, lack of appetite, pain when walking, among others were the symptoms I had.

The doctors who attended me did not know how to give me an accurate diagnosis in time, so my appendicitis became even more complicated. After two days with pain and discomfort, I was operated. The diagnosis with which I entered the operating room was “peritonitis”.

Thank God everything went well and after a week in the hospital I was discharged.

Like any post-surgical recovery, I had to take a lot of care for about 6 months.

I was very close to death, so this experience taught me many lessons, to value life and to be very grateful to God.
